? Re: Bound and Freeway DVDs

These two were some of my early DVD purchases back in the 90's. I'd like to get anamorphic versions but after searching it looks like R2 and R4 are my only options right now. Is there going to be newer versions anytime soon or even maybe an HD release in R1? Thanks for any info.

Peep 03-25-07 01:57 PM

Well, according to DVDempire, Freeway is coming out as an 1.85 Anamorphic SE on April 3rd. Troubling is that they list the original version as 2.35 and having a running time of 8 minutes longer.

If the specs are correct for both, we'll get an anamorphic release that's truncated in both picture and run-time. If so, no sale. :(

And despite, the lame "Widescreen" banner on the first release, the cover art is still much nicer.

mrhan 03-25-07 02:09 PM

The Republic release I have is 1.85. What is the theatrical OAR?

edit: IMDB also list it at 1.85:1.

matome 03-25-07 03:40 PM

Yeah, I just popped in my Republic disc and it's non-anamorphic 1.85:1 with a runtime of 1:41:55 (DVDEmpire's 110 minutes and 2.35:1 listing for the original disc is wrong). This seems to gel with the new release specs, so I'll definitely be picking this up, especially at $7 new. Lucky I saw this thread or I would have had no idea. Thanks! Ah, the good old days days when Reese made good flicks.

meritocracy 03-25-07 05:25 PM

Appreciate the info on the new anamorphic release Peep. I'll be upgrading.

Nice. A little out of the blue, though.

Rypro 525 03-26-07 01:14 AM

watch teenage girls buy/rent this thinking this will be a nice goody two shoes Reece.

That'll put a huge grin on my face.

I'm actually surprised it didn't happen earlier, what with Reese and Kiefer's current popularity.

Still torubling. If the spec for the old release were so wrong, who's to say that the new release is actually anamorphic? :)

matome 03-26-07 08:08 AM

I was thinking that as well. I'm just praying that in this day and age we will no longer get non-anamorphic discs from any studio, especially bigger ones like Lion's Gate. I'm willing to take a $7 gamble, since I'm not sure if we'll be getting an early review on this re-release.

BuckNaked2k 03-26-07 11:28 AM

Honestly, I never heard of Freeway, but I love, love, love Bound.

Although it is an affront to God and Man, in it's current non-anamorphic condition!!

matome 03-26-07 12:17 PM

Freeway is definitely worth a shot, if for anything but to totally destroy your current conceptions of Reese and Kiefer. This one is high up there in my fucked-up movies list.

scarredgod 03-26-07 04:19 PM

though Freeway is one whacked out movie, it really is a great performance by Reese.

When I first saw this I thought Reese was going to be another Parker Posey. She sort of became mainstream but this early work shows she can do edgy stuff if she really wanted to.

Peep 03-31-07 11:19 AM

I just got an email saying that my $2.50 copy of "Freeway" shipped from http://www.familyvideo.com

$6.50 + $1 shipping - $5 new customer discount:

Should have mine on Monday and I'll check the specs.

Totally agree. The LD is actually better than the DVD!

ReduxGuy 04-03-07 03:22 PM

Anamorphic, my aunt fanny!

I bought it today and except for the cover and art, it's the same damn disc!!!

Are you serious? That's pretty f*cked up if it is. Did it say it was anamorphic on the back of the cover?

Jaymole 04-03-07 04:08 PM

Lionsgate has a really bad habit of putting totally misleading information on the back of their DVDs. The Freeway DVD says 16X9 widescreen...which leads you to believe it is anamorphic.

What a crappy company.

What a crappy company.

They produce some great discs most of the time, and completely botch others!!!

Back to Best Buy!

meritocracy 04-03-07 07:15 PM

Ridiculous!

I'm glad I held off dumping the original disc in advance of this.

WTF  Now I'm actually glad I didn't get my preorder delivery yesterday instead of today and had opened it to check. Thanks for biting the bullet for us. Back to DVDEmpire it goes.

jmj713 04-03-07 09:38 PM

Ordered it because the back cover stated 16x9. Isn't this false advertising?

matome 04-03-07 10:15 PM

Well, technically it doesn't say anamorphic anywhere and I guess it is in the 16:9 shape with the 1.85:1 ratio. But still it's pretty crappy as nowadays I automatically assume all widescreen discs are anamorphic.

mrhan 04-03-07 10:31 PM

According to DVDcompare this is the version to get.
Does anyone know of a site with a better price for this version?

Well, with no special features (i.e. - deleted scenes), I won't be upgrading. Same with Bound - only for deleted scenes will I do it.

andy1992 04-05-07 01:03 PM

I recieved the new "Freeway" disc yesterday, and it is the EXACT same disc as the first release. EXACT SAME. The only difference is the artwork on the disc and case. What was the point of this re-release? It certainly wasn't to upgrade the video for 16x9 TV's - I was shocked to see it was still 4x3. I just do not understand releasing a widescreen DVD at 1.85:1 in the year 2007 and it NOT be processed for anamorphic - or ANY widescreen / letterboxed DVD for that matter. In my opinion, at this stage of the game, no studio should even entertain the idea. Why would they? You would think they would want to please the consumer and make some money. When the word gets out that this is the exact same 4x3 disc, I hope the sales are low to nothing, and the message gets through to these morons. I knew something was fishy when not one website could confirm the transfer at 16x9 or 4x3. Thankfully this was a rental, not a purchase.

I bet now that she has kids she wouldn't take on a role like this anymore. Having kids has ruined some good actors. They really lose their edge and daring (Bette Midler, Eddie Murphy, etc.) as if their kids will never see their older films!

Well, from Lion's Gate's point of view they must have bought the rights to the film from Republic and wanted to get their name on it and put big heads on the cover to capitalize on the huge boom Reese and Kiefer have had in the past ten years since the original release. Guess they wanted to go on the cheap and slap the same disc in the package and just change the packaging instead of doing a remaster. Sucks for us though.

You know what - I see your point, and you are probably right. If they really wanted to make an impression, they should have thought of the technical aspect of the disc along with it's two major stars. It really is a good movie, and it deserves better.

Which is fine, but don't put "16X9" in big print on the back.

RevKarl 04-06-07 04:39 PM

Maybe the guys who sued MGM Home Entertainment over their "widescreen shows more of the picture" DVD back cover descriptions will pick up one of these Lions Gate release and get their attorneys to file another class action lawsuit.

C_Fletch 02-03-08 07:31 AM

what a crock of shit. How do I get my money back from these LIARS and THEIFS. YOu cannt advertise something and then not provide it. Bait and switch anyone? I'd like an address to send this coaster to them as my appreciation of the MORONS who made this possible. The DVD caost me $1.95 so I am not too concerned but that didnt change the fact that I had to watch a stretched pciture that did not looke normal.
