I think most of us were expecting this, but not this quickly.
Figures after I bought the bare bones dvd. Oh well.

LorenzoL 03-06-07 05:51 PM

I'm glad that I held out and didn't buy the first release.

MEJHarrison 03-06-07 05:59 PM

I didn't pick up the original version. But I can't believe the arrogance of releasing this 3 1/2 months after the 1 disc version. It makes me not want to get either version to be honest. I think I'll have to find an alternate method of seeing this film for the sole purpose of not giving my money to Paramount (borrow the disc, rent, etc).

ernestrp 03-06-07 06:00 PM

Must have had low sale numbers.

DeanoBKN 03-06-07 06:17 PM

So they wait until the first month's of sales are over before announcing a special edition set 3 months down the line. Great.

basaro 03-06-07 06:28 PM

Cool, I knew there would be something better than the 1-disc eventually. Glad it's coming sooner than later so I don't have to wait so long. Wonder if this means the Babel 2-disc set will also be announced soon too.

Tarantino 03-06-07 07:01 PM

I'm surprised that people are surprised about this announcement.

Snowmaker 03-06-07 07:05 PM

I was waiting for a Flags / Iwo Jima set.

Sondheim 03-06-07 07:06 PM

While I am a little bit surprised they didn't wait a little longer to release this, it did seem inevitable that a special edition would come out at some point.

I didn't buy the first release, so this will definitely be a purchase for me.

DrStrangeL0ve71 03-06-07 07:12 PM

I figured this was going to happen around Letters From Iwo Jima. I think I'll wait until they put them in one set which will happen.

Still gonna wait for it.

Harold Wazzu 03-06-07 08:04 PM

What the heck are they going to do when Letters... comes out on dvd? Just bundle them together?

Willh51 03-06-07 08:17 PM

Glad I rented the movie, which was a lot better than I expected. Will pick this up if the extras seem decent, maybe an extended cut?

smashthesymbols 03-06-07 08:39 PM

That didn't take long. I held off on the single disc. I'd like to hold off for the inevitable set, but if I can get a good price I'll probably end up buying this.

Simpson Purist 03-06-07 08:46 PM

Holy crap that was fast. I'm hoping for some great extras about the real people at Iwo Jima (something along the lines of Black Hawk Down would rock).

I also heard that Letters From Iwo Jima is being released around the same time that month, so it's not much of a coincidence.

dpz301 03-06-07 08:59 PM

damn them.

The 22nd is Tuesday before Memorial Day. Everyone will be looking for a patriotic film. They probably did not want to wait putting out initial release and show a easy double dip.

Mr. Cinema 03-06-07 09:37 PM

Paramount/Dreamworks has US video rights to Flags of Our Fathers. Warner Brothers has US video rights to Letters From Iwo Jima. I'm not sure they're gonna pack these together. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Best Buy or Circuit City offers up a 2/something deal on these when both are available.

Flynn 03-06-07 09:56 PM

We ALL said there would be an SE coming up soon for this one. I held off and rented it from Netflix. Now that I've got an HD DVD player, I'll probably pull the trigger in May.

What Lorenzol said. A definite must buy for me, though I'm unsure whether I'll buy the SD, HD or Blu Ray version.

Rizor 03-06-07 11:54 PM

Pretty surprising to me at least. The first release was barebones and Eastwood isn't really known for his bountiful extras. I guess Paramount just released it early as an Oscar push.

Big Worms 03-07-07 12:41 AM

I held out for the HD-DVD version and it is going to have all the extras. Sweet!

ReduxGuy 03-07-07 12:47 AM

I'm not surprised that they're doing it.

I am hoping BB does like when Kill Bill was released and puts out a special case to hold both Flags and Letters (the superior film, IMO).

Splice them together as one extra long film only available in a super-limited release...yes, more limited than the Jarhead SE.

Boba Fett 03-07-07 01:34 AM

Prediction

Letters comes out as a single disc, and the studio slaps it along with the barebones Flags disc in a nice slip cover and tries to pass it off as a special set.

Then a few months later, it gets re-released ala this Flags disc and once again a bundle will be made.

Finally, a definitive set will be released of both films exclusively together with the soundtracks thrown together to entice repeat buyers.
