Underwhelming.. ill stick with my snapper case

nateman 08-17-07 12:24 PM

I’ll probably upgrade because it’s only going to be $15 but the ‘special edition’ isn’t going to be so special. After Sony’s 2-disc ‘limited’ collector’s edition of Taxi Driver, I thought the WB would try a little harder as well.

I’m mainly getting this too see how the remastered version will look. It probably won’t be very impressive, we’ll see though.

Nice! Looking forward to this big time

Rammsteinfan 08-17-07 01:55 PM

Hmmm the back just says Remastered audio... if the picture quality is the same... definitely no sale.

Trevor 08-17-07 02:21 PM

I never bought the first, so I'm in.

dullboy 08-17-07 03:30 PM

The name of that documentary sounds like it has nothing to do with the movie...just a real-life supernatural phenomena piece. And the picture better be remastered, not just the audio...it's the picture that needed the real overhaul from the last edition.

mayorofsmpleton 08-17-07 05:05 PM

WTF?

I thought they did commentaries with the cast for this release? Or at least interviews. Didn't that news come out?

Perhaps those are included in the documentary, but still... fairly underwhelming. I just sold my snapper version, but the best thing about this release is the updated picture/sound (which they had better work on the transfer, it was good for 2000, but could use a significant clean-up) and that they mostly kept the original theatrical artwork...

Rogue588 08-17-07 07:48 PM

Terrible. Simply terrible.

CertifiedTHX 08-17-07 08:34 PM

Nice cover. But no sale. The documentary seems to have nothing to do with the production of the movie itself. And no commentary. Guess I shall thank Warner Bros. for saving me a little money this year.

Cool cover but the added features seem anemic for a 25th anniv. ed. I was hoping for a DTS soundtrack but i guess not!

Joel Goodsen 08-18-07 02:42 AM

Count me in as disappointed. I have held off previous releases in hope of a solid SE, and this is way below par. I find it amazing that Warner build the release up in a chat, get our hopes up and then give us a low blow. Throw in the towel coach, Im done.

I hope you get too review this 2-disc ‘special edition’. It’ll be very interesting.

It’s very disappointing that only the audio is being remastered. Indeed the video was the real thing that needed the clean up. I’m surprised Craig T. Nelson didn’t do a commentary at the very least. Besides having a part in Blades of Glory, he really hasn’t been that busy. I’m surprised that he didn’t get involved with the Coach DVD releases as well.

Oh well, guess we’ll have too wait for the 35th anniversary edition (probably 30th) & hopefully they put some worthy bonus features & the long awaited commentary track. Like I said, I’ll still get this cause it’s only $15 but I’m still very disappointed.

Dane Marvin 08-18-07 09:22 AM

Simply lame. Why label it as a 25th Anniversary Edition if you're not going to make it something special? The doc that has to do with the paranormal would be nice... on like a 2-disc set that is packed with extras that actually have something to do with the movie itself. But as the standalone bonus feature, that is just retarded.

This went from a release day purchase to something I probably just try to trade for.

pipemann 08-18-07 09:23 AM

I thought Poltergeist has both a remastered picture and sound, at least that what davisdvd.com said.

tonyjg 08-18-07 09:32 PM

I'd wait til it comes up in some DeepDiscount 'buy 2 get 1 free' sale - bound to see it soon with this lackluster edition !!

The Valeyard 10-03-07 05:33 PM

First review I've seen so far:

TomOpus 10-03-07 05:45 PM

Pretty much what we've expected. At least the picture/sound has been improved.

tonyjg 10-03-07 08:00 PM

Out of interest......

How is it that POLTERGEIST - as an MGM title - is (still) being released via Warner Bros ??

*** I of course note that there is a Turner logo on the pack cover though !!

With all the movements in the MGM/UA saga .... including distributions by Warners... themselves... Sony and Fox... I wonder much much of this MGM/UA library has been spread around to various companies ? And I wonder why the total library doesnt exist in one place ?

NoirFan 10-03-07 09:29 PM

What a joke. Worst SE since The Jerk.

Ethan VanSciver 10-04-07 06:57 AM

Aw..hell. I was really looking forward to this.

aintnosin 10-04-07 05:27 PM

As someone who A) hasn't bought the movie yet and B) rarely gives a crap about extras, I'm just happy to be getting a good transfer.

Gotta agree on this. Best Buy will have it for $10 and that's a decent deal for a good movie.

Darn, looks like the new release loses the trailer.
