Do you understand all the religious symbolism in the movie? Once you do, it's an even more intriguing film.

You can go to town on the religious symbolism alone!!! I heard someone compare Strother Martin to Pontius Pilate on on DVD forum!

Why do people keep posting in this thread if there is no news about this release? Please stop!

Sorry for the bump.

Anybody know what happened to this release? I was waiting for this supposed 40th anniversary release since 06 and now we're in 08.

What should have been done? There's no new news here. But I bet we get a Blu-ray day and date when there finally is news!

Looks like a Blu-ray and SD deluxe DVD are going to be released on Sept 9. Features are going to include a commentary and a featurette: A Natural Born World Shaker: The Making of Cool Hand Luke.

Thanks for the info.
MSRP is $19.97 for SD and $28.99 for BD. Sounds like a single disc only ala Deliverance Deluxe. Nothing so great we had to wait this long for, but I've been waiting for something that at least isn't a damn snapper case, so I'm getting it.

Regard Luke as a Christ figure and you hold the key to deciphering the film.

We studied the religious symbolism in a film class I once took and everyone missed what to me was an obvious analogy...the sexy woman "Lucy" (car wash scene) tempting everyone but Luke. Lucy = Lucifer. It all seemed pretty obvious to me, but no one else picked up on it. I'm sure there is plenty I missed, though. The aforementioned Strother Martin being Pontius Pilate is one example.

Yeah. After the great job Warners did with Bonnie and Clyde and the up-coming How The West Was Won, I thought 'Luke' would get two disc treatment with all the bells and whistles. Or at least, a new documentary on Newman. This is one of his signature roles, especially if the rumours are true about his rapidly declining health. He truly is a cinematic legend.

They should license out the Jackass segment where they reenact the egg-eating contest.

Cover looks pretty good, but I'm disappointed they didn't go with the really cool original poster art.

Agreed, the original poster is badass looking. IIRC Edward Norton has it in his apartment in the vastly underrated 25th Hour.

But I like this new one, has a certain new-vintage niceness to it.
