Great news, except for them squishing more than 1 movie per disc.

Why are you highlighting this, isn't this the same as the current disc?

(sorry for the out of order)

I'll have to recheck that one, I don't remember, you are probably right.

But I still wonder why you highlighted that, do you know that the new one is not an open matte?

those specs are from the universal website. Oddly enough I looked at a back cover for the Glenn Miller story and it list it as widescreen, but I remember not buying it because it was open matte. People over at HTF were also claiming it to be open matte as well...so this is a bit confusing

ok figured out why i didn't buy it first time out. The original dvd is widescreen. while the original aspect ratio would be full screen. dvd beaver has good comparison

this was not an open matte situation as the film was presented academy ration in theaters

Some of the confusion is down to me I'm afraid I made the erroneous first post in that thread at the HTF, which I corrected yesterday morning when I realised that the disc is anamorphic widescreen (I own it for gawd's sake...) and the argument is that it should be Academy.

However, in that same thread, there is a cogent argument that Universal was right and that it was framed for widescreen. Indeed the framing does look pretty good on the current disc (though it could do with being centred a little better) and when I've seen the film (presumably the open-matte version) on TCM there does seem a little too much headroom.

Universal has presented other films, made during the months that widescreen took off in '53/'54, in open-matte (The Creature from the Black Lagoon springs to mind) that look better matted, but I'm pretty sure they did the right thing with The Glenn Miller Story.

When you do watch a film that was shot for Academy cropped down for widescreen it looks horrible. George Stevens shot Shane in Academy but it was projected at 1.66:1 in many theatres anxious to get on that widescreen boom. Even with so little cropping it looks terribly cramped.
