Oscar nominated Shorts
For many years I've been watching the Oscars and pretty much ignore the awards for short films as I never get a chance to see them. Anyone know where or how these films are distributed? I would love to be able to see at least some of them before the awards.
Here's a list of the nominees for reference Best documentary short subject The Blood of Yingzhou District Recycled Life Rehearsing a Dream Two Hands Best animated short film The Danish Poet (National Film Board of Canada) Lifted (Buena Vista) The Little Matchgirl (Buena Vista) Maestro (Szimplafilm) No Time for Nuts (20th Century Fox) Best live action short film Binta and the Great Idea (Binta Y La Gran Idea) Éramos Pocos (One Too Many) (Kimuak) Helmer & Son The Saviour (Australian Film Television and Radio School) West Bank Story |
Magnolia released the animated features theatrically and together on home video, I would assume likewise, the animated shorts (sans 'No Time for Nuts' since it's on the Ice Age 2 DVD) will be complied for commercial video release.
It's from last year, http://www.indiewire.com/biz/2006/02...ia_and_sh.html but I know that Magnolia is indeed releasing the animated shorts theatrically again for this year. "After the Oscars, the shorts will be available through HDNet and Magnolia's Home Entertainment division as well as other platforms that include ShortsTV on mobile phones". hopefully HDNet will air this years noms as well. |
the past two years a website (which i have forgotten) has posted the shorts for a short amount of time before oscar time. If you search movie talk, you may find them, or hopefully someone can chime in on it.
The Belcourt here in Nashville, and the Circle in Tulsa have ran the shorts as well, so you may try you local indie/revival theaters for these. |
You can see clips of the animated shorts here

The Match Girl short is on the new Little Mermaid DVD.
|
And "No Time for Nuts" is on the "Ice Age: The Meltdown" disc...

Binta and the Great Idea (30min) is up to watch on iFilm.com.
Little Matchgirl was on Youtube but someone told me it's gone. No Time for Nuts is also on Youtube. The University of Iowa is playing all 3 groups of Oscar nominated shorts in mid Feb at their Bijou Theatre. I've tried to search endlessly but only found those three. I thought last years Magnolia dvd was something that needs to be addressed every year, maybe if in or around Oscar time so we can watch them prior to the show. I love shorts. Judging by the 3 I saw, they were average at best. Last years I thought were really good. |
I want to say that it was Esquire, or some comparable magazine, that hosted the animated nominees on their site for a few days leading up to the show...but I can't be certain.

AFI used to show these before the Oscar ceremony, but it seems that the one here in DC abandoned it this year for their Kubrick-fest.
