NC-17 rated version vs R rated version of "Murder-Set-Pieces"

A clarification by the filmmaker himself.

"Hey guys,

There was 22 minutes cut out of the Lion's Gate 83 minute "R" rated version of "Murder-Set-Pieces"!! (twenty-two minutes)......a record for a horror film!!

The Lion's Gate "R" rated version is based on the THEATRICAL CUT---which ran 105 minutes. LG's version is now 83 minutes!!

My Director's Cut DVD of "M-S-P" runs 90 minutes. It is Uncut as well, but I tightened the film to my original vision. (I edited my Director's Cut version for artistic reasons, not censorship reasons).

So, the Lion's Gate version was edited from the 105 minute Theatrical Cut.

Lion's Gate edited it for censorship reasons. (The only reason they edited it from the Theatrical version, and not my Director's Cut, is to pad the running time---other wise the film would time in at 68 minutes!!)

(Note: Both the Theatrical 105 minute Cut and my Director's Cut 90 minute DVD (released by Fright Flix Productions) are UNCUT, NC-17 rated versions!!.

Both the Theatrical Cut and my Director's Cut versions are essentially my vision......where as the Lion's Gate "R" cut was done to appease the MPAA--- (Motion Picture Association of America---and----get it into Blockbuster Video.

"Murder-Set-Pieces" was NEVER intended to be an "R" rated film. It was made with the "NC-17" rating firmly in mind from the beginning.

I DID NOT edit this new "R" rated cut from LGF.

My vision was edited by the great Todd Ramsay (John Carpenter's "The Thing").

Seeing the "NC-17" rated version of "Murder-Set-Pieces", is an entirely different experience than the severely edited "R" rated version.........

....(and, I'm not only talking about the gore scenes, the rape scenes, the child murder scenes, and the torture scenes.......I'm talking about the specific dialouge that is edited out of the film, the music, the cinematography and the editing, period..... etc...etc...)

I am honored that LGF picked up my film for distribution for the masses, and it is also my hope that one day everyone can see "Murder-Set-Pieces" the way it was meant to be seen.

Hope this clears up all the controversy.

I appreciate everyone who checks out ANY version of the film.....THANK YOU!!!"

This film sounds like a winner!

thanks for the thread.

Please go away.

I rented this tonight and will view it soon. From what I am told by those who have seen the uncut version of the film. Is that the film should be titled Aftermath Set Pieces, since very few of the murders are shown onscreen. And we're only shown the aftermath with tons of blood splatter and or body parts. And the couple onscreen moments are incredibly fake looking they say.

So if the majority of the gore is just aftermath glimpses. If they chop down on all that, then not much will be left obviously. It'll be interesting to finally see the film in some form though. But it sounds like a major butchur job and the uncut version definitely should be released, regardless if it's a good film or not.

TomOpus 01-11-07 08:07 PM

I'd be interested to hear how it compares since I have the DC.

natevines 01-11-07 08:21 PM

Gore hounds will be disappointed with the NC-17 version, downloaded it a while back and thought it was incredibly lacking giving its reputation. It doesn't go too far past a typical R hollywood horror flick.

GaryDisinfected 01-11-07 09:15 PM

That's bullshit, and I'm calling you on it. 22 minutes had to be cut out of the film for an R rating. What did the MPAA cut out nudity? No cause it's all there. Swearing? It's a different film cut and not comparable. For those interested buy the Uncut and don't look back.

matome 01-11-07 10:08 PM

Good thing I saw this thread so I could cancel my R-rated preorder. Ordered the unrated DVD from xploited, so I'm looking forward to it. Where's the Blu-ray?

DiedLaughing 01-12-07 12:11 AM

I got the Unrated cut for my birthday last year (along with his other film NUTBAG) and I think they are both god awful... pretty much unwatchable. I liked the gore and nudity in MSP but overall that couldnt even save the film. I dunno why I even have held onto these for this long...

Filmmaker Nick Palumbo on Fangoria Radio AGAIN this Friday!!

FOR THE THIRD TIME IN AS MANY WEEKS, controversial cult filmmaker Nick Palumbo will be LIVE on the Sirius Satellite Radio Network this Friday, February 2nd, 2007 at 8:30 p.m PST!!!

The ORIGINAL Splat Packer himself will be discussing Dee Snider's slanderous charges of anti-Semitism and child endangerment, ....and….. Dee Snider, Debbie Rochon and Tony Timpone will pose the question: Has director Nick Palumbo created a film that has gone past the Supreme Court's legal definition of obscenity??

The debate will also include your PHONE CALLS about the most infamous Grand-Guignol horror film in cinematic history: "MURDER-SET-PIECES".

"MURDER-SET-PIECES"--- has sent shockwaves throughout the film world for being the first 35mm narrative film in history BANNED from film labs and horror film festivals.

"MURDER-SET-PIECES"---the shot on beautiful 35mm film renowned the world over for its savagely satanic vision of America—--and, at a budget of $2.2 million dollars, the most expensive independent horror film ever made.

The seamy streets of Las Vegas pulsate with neon decadence and tremble under the horsepower of the "Photographer's" Hemi-Powered Muscle car.

The film features a misogynistic fashion photographer, (with a NAZI heritage) whose vocation is murder.

The viewer is assaulted with visceral images: Graphically realistic child murder, sadistic rape scenes, cruel and unusual torture, pre-pubescent stalking, necrophilia, cannibalism, gratuitous full-frontal nudity of beautiful teen-age strippers and prostitutes, a sickening scene of severed-head fellatio--including the money shot, one of kind original 35mm 9/11 footage, and a hauntingly amazing sequence featuring a bloody, crying, hysterical toddler, clutching her real Mother's savaged corpse---all shot on glorious 35mm film.

The Fangoria Radio show is presented LIVE and UNCUT on Sirius Satellite Radio;

"MURDER-SET-PIECES",

"4 out of 4 Stars"---For slasher film fans, this is the pot o' gold at the end of a blood-stained rainbow. The most erotically charged, aggressively deranged, unabashedly brutal American horror film EVER made. The perfect date movie--if your date happens to be Charles Manson. An instant--deeply twisted---classic".

CBS NEWS

"For his second effort, the director Nick Palumbo erupts onto the cinematic scene with a high-anxiety spectacle that induces aneurysms in guardians of decency. Palumbo has made his own apoplectic fit of a movie in which blood cascades down faces and torsos, wherever fists, blades, bullets and, yes, a chain-saw blade have broken the skin. Palumbo's monstrous tableaus might just provoke cries for restrictions in art, even among staunch defenders of artistic freedom".

The New York Times

"Aptly titled "Murder-Set-Pieces," writer-helmer Nick Palumbo's second feature offers over-the-top horror imagery as a Las Vegas serial killer dispatches one victim after another, the pic distinguishes itself via sheer extremity of gore, sadism and tastelessness".

Variety

"The Most Graphic Horror Film Ever Commited to Celuloid".

Hustler Magazine

"The disturbing "Murder-Set-Pieces" is a highly stylized exploration of the mind of a serial killer, a gory, bloodsoaked snuff film, reveling in its own shock value as women are stabbed, strangled, raped and mutilated in every conceivable — and a few inconceivable — ways".

The New York Post

"Interesting to speculate what scene it may have been about Nick Palumbo's glitzy simulated snuff movie, glued together by the story of a 12-year-old girl's developing aversion to her big sister's beefy, glowering stiff of a neo-Nazi fashion-photographer boyfriend (Sven Garrett), that led three Hollywood labs to reject it for processing. A first in the HISTORY of motion pictures".

Los Angeles Weekly

"Murder-Set-Pieces" is about to blow everyone's minds. It's incredibly good. It's extremely well made. It's directed impeccably, and it's definitely, no holds barred, the most brutal and graphic film I've ever seen (that includes porn and all horror films. "Murder-Set-Pieces" is the serial killer film to end all serial killer films".

Film Threat

"3 out of 4 Stars"---An interesting effort to make the ultimate horror movie by imitating modern classics of the genre in a systematic way, putting actors from the original "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" into the cast for good measure. Be warned that the results are in aggressively awful taste from beginning to end, though".

The Christian Science Monitor

"Director Nick Palumbo displays visual brilliance reminiscent of the best works of Dario Argento".

Rue-Morgue Magazine

"An Instant Classic".

Ultra Violent Magazine

"Murder-Set-Pieces" is a sick, repellent, and ultimately offensive movie".

Fangoria Magazine

"Amazingly, "Murder-Set-Pieces" is one of those rare films that actually lives up to the hype. It's brutal, graphic, shocking, unsettling, and upsetting – and I loved every minute of it. Ultimately, "M-S-P" is an amazing film that will offend and disturb almost everyone who manages to view it".

IGN.com

"Nick Palumbo's exploitive, brilliant "Murder-Set-Pieces", a film primed to become a lightning rod for controversy and misdirected rage by the pious right and the spineless left. The film is a truly pure cinematic expression of violent sexual rage. "Murder-Set-Pieces", perhaps the greatest serial killer film ever made, manages to be one thing, while also commenting on that one thing, at the same time. It is a revolutionary, important, haunting work".

The Film Journal.com

"Nick Palumbo has taken the horror film to a place never before seen in history".

William Lustig---legendary director of director of "Maniac"(1980).

"Murder-Set-Pieces" is the real deal. It's more than just a GREAT film; it's pure poetry".

Roger Watkins----legendary director of the "The Last House on Dead End Street"(1972)

"Murder-Set-Pieces" beats out "The Devil's Reject's, "Land of the Dead, "High Tension" and "Wolf Creek" as the BEST horror film of 2005!

Nice plant...

j_sutton 02-02-07 03:25 PM

Jesus, this is bad... I don't know whether to blame Palumbo himself or somebody else involved in production (I'd guess the former). The "promotion" for MSP so far has consisted of going on message boards and talking about how sick and demented it is... IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND AND RAPE YOUR FAMILY! ... uhh... it's not very good. Horrible, in fact. And not in a "this is SICK!" way... in a "this fucking sucks" sort of way. A bloody german making crazy faces is not scary, sick, whatever. It was downright comical, in the opinion of those who saw it. On the same level as "The Last House on the Left 2006"... I mean, Chaos. Great for MST3K parties, though! Right next to "Hammerhead Shark Frenzy", it's perfect.

Hopefully Palumbo will back off the deluded self-promotion and work on making his next film (if applicable) better, so that it can stand on its own without hopeless shilling.

(btw, not a threadcap, just a balancing act with the obvious plant action in here)

indiephantom 02-02-07 04:46 PM

I enjoyed it on a sleaze level. It's decent trash. It is nothing to get too enthusiastic about and is hardly well made.

scarredgod 02-02-07 05:13 PM

if the guy had any talent whatsoever, he wouldnt need to do all ridiculous hype promotion, it just makes him look stupid. this same post is on other message boards, so this is indeed spam.

Ya, this movie wasn't disturbing in the least. Amateurish is the word that comes to mind first. Stupid would be next. Whoopdeedo, it was shot on 35mm. Who cares?

Anyone looking for something really disturbing may want to check out Unearthed Films DVD release of "CANNIBAL". I watched that last night and can't seem to wash it out of my head. I've seen some sick sh*t, but that movie really pushes the envelope farther than anything M-S-P could ever dream of accomplishing, and it's based on a true story. Maybe the sickest most deranged film I've ever seen. I think the DVD-Talk reviewer hated it, but don't dismiss it on that one opinion. And, no, this isn't a plant.

Agh! It's the War of the Plants™! Somebody get Dr. Boll on the line, he needs representation! :)

Maybe I'll check it out...
