Electric Dreams on dvd??

Has anybody heard when or if this is coming to dvd?

petroc 01-10-07 07:39 PM

I loved this movie as a kid. I'd so buy it, but I wonder if it's aged well.

Deke Rivers 01-11-07 01:28 PM

"hello moles"...wow forgot all about this one!

joliom 01-11-07 02:24 PM

No word so far. I'm sure we'll see it eventually. Just judging by how much it gets mentioned around here, I'd say there's at least a modest demand for it. It was available on laserdisc, so if you're desperate you could always see about getting a dub to tide you over until the official DVD release.

I almost won a LD of this on Ebay, but was sniped at the last second. Would be happy to do a DVD transfer for anyone who has a Laserdisc.

Oh no - now that stupid computer/cello challenge duet is rattling around in my head!

Who cares how it has aged? Some movies are worth it for the nostalgia alone.

Ah, Virginia Madsen......

I'd love to see this one again. I was very close to pouring sprakling grape juice on my Commodore 64 in hopes of meeting her, but my addiction to Dr. J vs. Larry Bird saved me. I loved the soundtrack as well Culture Club ("Love is love") and Human League lead singer. And of course the duet between Edgar and Virginia.....

riley_dude 01-12-07 12:02 AM

I love the music. I have the soundtrack.

FILMCZY 01-12-07 01:55 PM

This is probably being held up due to the music rights issue. The soundtrack has various artists so I'm sure each song has to be negotiated in order to clear it for the dvd release. Some studios do not want to pony-up for the high cost. This is why it took so long for "Heavy Metal" to be released on dvd. Remember the musical rights agreed upon for the laserdisc release are not the same as the dvd since it is a different medium. I believe this is also why "Looking for Mr Goodbar" has never been released on dvd. I hear it can take years to clear the rights.

Mike Adams 01-12-07 03:44 PM

I doubt that. I'm pretty sure the songs share the same record company, and most likely the same music publishers. With the exception of things like "You Can't Hurry Love" (which could easily be replaced since it was only in the "broken radio" scene) and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" (which I don't even remember hearing anywhere in the movie), most of the songs were written for the film, so I can't see why music licensing should be a problem.

Speaking of the soundtrack, I have a PAL VHS tape called "Electric Dreams: The Video Soundtrack", which is basically just the music videos for some of the songs, apparently interspersed with dialogue from the film (don't have a PAL VCR, so I can't watch it). I'd really love to see this as a bonus item if an official DVD release ever happens.

Who can resist a cello-playing blonde who loves classical music and prefers nerds over hunks?

Amen, brother.

Apparently, she still prefers nerds... seen Sideways? ;)

By the way, most fans probably know this, but Virginia and Lenny re-teamed in the thriller Love Kills, which is another title that has yet to appear on DVD. Not a bad flick, and it's really great to see those two again, albeit in very different roles, especially Lenny.

It's asinine that this fun movie and countless others haven't been released on Standard Definition DVD. Why should I upgrade to high def if the studios haven't even bothered to release some of their popular titles on DVD 10 years into the format?

Alan Smithee 01-12-07 04:15 PM

"Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" is heard as a Muzak version in the supermarket. Not sure why the music rights issues on this movie are any worse than hundreds of other movies that have come out on DVD.

Disc-Flipper 01-12-07 05:08 PM

It's funny how they used pop hits to sell these movies originally.
But then those same pop hits prevent the movie from being sold on DVD.

Tell me about it. As a child of the '80s, there are countless lost gems I'm still waiting on. Some of them - like Howard the Duck or Little Darlings - are far from obscure. What's the big hold-up? In the meantime we get 20 different incarnations of the latest Sony hits...

I like this one and the soundtrack. Not sure it's something I want to own, but definitely want to watch this one again.

My mom's been waiting for this to show up on DVD. I had to track down a VHS copy for her years after it went out of print. It's one of her favorites.

Fingers crossed for a Region 1 version. I'm region free. She isn't.

I put my VHS on DVR. The movie has definitely maintained its charm over time. Really hope this one comes out R1.
