Could the 40th Anniversary of The Graduate possibly be ignored?

I noticed it was coming when there were questions about the last (3rd?) bare-bones release, and was reminded of it multiple times in magazines and newspapers doing "What's ahead in 2007" stories this week. THE GRADUATE is 40 years old this year.

So has there been any rumblings of Sony/MGM finally giving it the treatment it deserves? It's such a no-brainer and always turns up on those "Most in need of a SE" thread. What's the deal? It doesn't seem like something they would ignore when much, much shittier films have been treated so lavishly with much less prompting.

Back a year or two ago it was sorta announced for a 2-discer, along with a few others that were actually released. But The Graduate wasn't. One of the best films of all time, and all we have is a crappy last-century non-anamorphic disc. This needs bells and whistles up the wazoo.

I feel like I should turn my film buff card in for saying this-I've never seen the film.

I have the current R1 disc, but I can't seem to bring myself to watch it since I've read how bad it's supposed to look. I may just import this HD DVD if there is no hint of a domestic release by March.

I thought The Graduate was a requirement to get your card, obviously you cheated, so please turn yourself in.

I was first exposed to this film in vhs form and caught it on tv before I finally picked it up on DVD, the format shouldn't have a bearing on the impact of the film.

Back on topic, I'd like to see an 2D SE. but seeing how its been released a couple of times already I don't hold out much hope to see one in this current format.

This is one of my top-5 favorite all-time films. It was this movie, along with Hitchcock's Psycho and North by Northwest that really turned me on to exploring pre-1980 cinema classics. It's still very modern, still resonant and beautiflly shot even if the transfer is not up to current standards. Please, DVD gods, give us an anamorphic version!

HD DVD is in March and Blu-Ray is in May. I'm assuming you're going to get your SE around there on regular DVD.

Yeah, this one is way overdue. Way too huge a classic to not be given it's proper respect on DVD. They need to render a new transfer from the original negative to make us all proud and get it out in anamorphic on SD-DVD (and in HD on BRD) this year. No excuses for missing the boat again in 2007.

Definitely in my personal Top 5, had a profound affect on me when I first saw it (Criterion laser...early 90's).

It seems to be one of the last 'classics' not to be given the anamorphic treatment, along with 'Psycho'. I'm sure there are some others... 2007 would be ideal for a nicely done, well packaged SE.

Yeah, the existing transfer is pretty lame, especially the beginning when he's on the plane. It could look a lot, lot better. There was an announced DVD with a slightly revised cover -- some "Cinema Classics" cover, but nothing happened. I bet Hoffman would be willing to participate in a commentary and some new features, and of course Katharine Ross. Too bad Anne Bancroft is not still around to share her insights, as she was not a participant in the previous DVD either.

I love this movie and I can't wait. Deserves the 2-disc treatment. I don't know who produces DVDs over at Fox/MGM, but I kind of hope it's Fox. When a movie gets the 2-disc treatment from Fox, I find it's usually a fantastic set.

Psycho is anamorphic now in the Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection. A Clockwork Orange is still waiting in the wings, however.

The African Queen still isn't even on DVD yet.

Back to the topic, The Graduate is great. I own the DVD and still watch it when it's on TV, fullscreen, edited, and interrupted with commercials.

I'll be importing the HD-DVD then. Even if this comes out on BR its gonna be $40 with no extras, might as well get it a bit early.
