How do you open new DVDs?
 

I use a box cutter (gently) to slice through the cellophane and security strips at the same time. I remove the cellophane and then open the case. Then I remove the split security stickers (gently, mind you) and wrap them around the wad of cellophane…producing this!

Some landfill worker (or seagull) will discover this in a million years and ruminate on my impulse to buy KakuRenBo. (again, after some chick I lent it to disappeared and, basically, kept it.)

Pretty much the same way (box-cutter down security tag and cellophane) without the neat wrapping job. My ex thought I was crazy.

I have one of those little gadgets that have an embedded razor in it and it slides right over the DVD case edges. Works great!

I always wanted to get one of those DVD openers but have never seen them out anywhere.

I use the box cutter technique as well.

I carefully peel off the security stickers and stick them on the reverse side of the cover insert; or if it's a rare case where the cover insert has printing on both sides I'll stick them on the inside of the case. Whenever there's a sticker on the shrinkwrap advertising special features or whatever, I'll cut that out and put it inside the case.

i just rip it open and discard all the case and packing materials, i keep all my dvds on a spindle that used to hold cdrs

Teeth or keys to initally tear through the cellophane. Then use fingers to tear the rest off and into a "wad", but not as nice a wad as Kudamas.

Actually, in recent years I've perfected a technique where I can "surgically" remove the disc(s) and insert inside a case and have the outer packaging (shrinkwrap, security stickers, cellophane, slipcover) remain relatively intact. Box cutter/razor blade comes in handy. It looks as new as it sat on the store shelf, except for it being lighter in weight.

I keep the discs in binders.

I use my teeth for the plastic wrapping, and my nails to peel off the security sticker. I usually leave it laying on the bed, until my boyfriend throws it out.

Most of the time I can get it open just using my fingers if I'm persistent, but occasionally a key may be used on a non-graphics part of the case. Peeling the security stickers off is a very touchy procedure for me, mostly because I don't want to rip the cover insert when doing it. I don't keep any of the packing material or security stickers, since they are not really part of the package, they're just wrapping necessary for retail sale.

I see a lot of DVDs where the security stickers are simply split and left on to collect dust, hair, pubes, or whatever. That is just damn nasty in my opinion. Even if the stickers aren't there, a lot of times people leave copious amounts of residue, which causes the same problem. As I said, I'm really careful about removing the stickers, and if any residue is left, I try to dab the sticker back on it to try and pull it off. For that reason, I tend to leave them stuck to the coffee table or whatever until I've opened all the DVDs I've just bought -- never know when one will come in handy if a certain DVD is more stubborn than the others. Once I'm done I fold the stickers in half so they don't get stuck to something in the garbage (like it really even matters at that point), but I'm not nearly as meticulous about it as the OP.

One extra little note: 99% of the time, if I buy a DVD used, the keepcase gets replaced. I'm really careful with my DVDs, so even slight scuffing of the case is pretty obvious in my collection.

After working in a record store that accepted trade-ins, and seeing the slashes that can sometimes be left by those little "opener" thingies (although they may have been used improperly), it confirmed for me that sharp objects don't really belong around something you want to keep as pristine as possible. The plastic in keepcases is relatively soft, so I've stayed away from any kind of blades. I've never had a real big problem opening a DVD, anyway.

I use my fingers. Security crap and wrapping gets tossed out.

Teeth/Fingers.. I did have a DVD that was so stubborn to open that I burnt the plastic wrap to open it.

With no damage to the DVD!

Carefuly and all the while cursing the shrink wrap "protecting" the DVD by melting onto the spine of the case, and then trying to get the security stickers off without ripping chunks out of the paper art jacket which has been left protruding outside the clear plastic bit!

Swiss army knife around the seams does the trick.

i usually just got with the scissors through the top on the security device sticker where the box closes and then cut any additional stickers and remove the security device.

Swiss Army knife or nail file. Then I scrunch and bind all the wrapping tightly together with the security tapes. I hate when the damn tape doesn't come off cleanly and leaves behind residue on the DVD case, which is most of the time.

I do the same exact thing! It all ends up neat and tidy. I can then just toss the ball into the trash.

Remember the scene in Dead Calm where Billy Zane tears Nicole Kidman's pants off? That's how I open my DVDs.
