Right now i've got 1070+ (with all my box sets only counted as 1 through DVDprofiler, so my actual disc count is much higher) and i've got two empty shelves on my third bookcase. I would say at least 400+ single cases.

I need two and cannot find them anywhere and IKEA does no sell them online.

EDIT: The only IKEA store that has the 30x10 Birch Veneer extra Billy Bookcase shelf is College Park, MD. Anyone near there feeling generous? I will most certainly pay. :)

How much do those bookcases cost and how long does it take to assemble? Also I may be stupid or tired but I only count six shelves on yours. By the way I live like 30 minutes from College Park, how much do the shelves cost, if I have time I will go by this weekend and post in here if I do find the shelves for you.

The last shelf is not displayed in the photo (I was to close with the camera). Can you spot one of my oddball shelves in the bottom left corner? The other one is below it. The birch color I have cost 79.99, but they have multiple colors at that size starting at 49.99 for white. It only took about 20 minutes to put together (and I even have a broke hand right now). A 30x10 Birch extra bookshelf costs $12 a piece (according to their out of inventory website) and I would REALLY appreciate it if you picked me up two. I could paypal you right away. Shoot me an email by clicking on my user name in the thread with any details. Thanks. Here's a better pic with all shelves shown (and my trusty Basset Hound Rosco included).

Whomever steals your collection will be sure to thank you for making it easier.
I agree...plus binders to me are just plain stupid. It ruins the library experience. But then again I'm a collector and film loving snob....so I'll blow it out my ass.:D

But binders? YUK.

No, they won't. The person who grabs a trash bag and dumps hundreds of DVDs still in their cases off the shelves and into the bag will definitely thank that collector though, because they'll know they can take those DVDs to any store that accepts trade-ins and walk away with hundreds of dollars in new merchandise,
Fuck all that. Todays crackheads are a bunch of lazy-ass idiots who are going to pass those dvds right on by because bagging them and hauling them takes too much energy. With my film vault....the dogs would turn the pricks into hamburger within seconds. How about just having some security? A dvd loving theif....he will just pick up those binders, make himself preggo and off he goes. To watch...not sell the discs.

I totally agree with Mike Adams on using binders when your collection gets large. It is way too much work trying to keep organization under control, and I get really ticked when I can't find a DVD I am looking for. Most DVD's now just come in a case with just the outer artwork in the sleeve. These discs go directly into a binder, then I add the title to an Excel file with it's location, 16-149(Binder 16-Slot 149). I can sort the file alphabetically, by genre, or any type of search field I want to add. I never have to move the discs around in the binders. When I have the time I will add this info to my DVDAF entries for location as well. Now I still will keep my special editions, box sets, Criterions, autographed cases and sets such as the Masters of Horror out on shelves for display, but if it is just a DVD in a case, it goes in a binder. I put the artwork from the case sleeve in a folder, alphabetically in a bankers box for storage. The empty cases go in large plastic bags and are stored in the crawlspace under the house. Snapper cases get put in boxes and stored high on shelves in the garage. Two shelves in my book case can hold twenty 200 disc binders, so now I have room to grow again, and can find my movies quick and easy.

As far as worrying about theft, I am not sure where some of you live, maybe that is a concern to you, but I have lived in my home for 14+ years and have never had a problem. I do have a central alarm system, not so much for my DVD collection, but for all my belongings. Aside from a large DVD collection, I have an entire bedroom converted to storage for my 25,000+ comic and monster mag collection(which is lockable) and I have a good sized collection of assault rifles, shotguns and handguns(which add to my overall home security protection plan, and handy for the day zombies or fleshy-headed mutants try to take over the world!) I pay additional insurance for the collections, which if you have a large collection of DVD's is a must. Your regular homeowners or renters insurance will cover very little if any.

Ok, didn't mean to turn that into a rant...so to sum it up, binders have worked great for me.

Sorry, but "crackheads" are after crack, which takes money. The chances of anyone stealing your DVD collection because they actually want to watch them are pretty damn slim.

...of course given the "eloquence" of your post, I hardly need to take the time to contradict it.

Who is your insurer? I have State Farm, and my homeowner's insurance covers all of my DVD collection without buying an additional 'rider policy'.

Hank1215 01-20-07 06:08 AM

You might want to double check with your insurance agent. Most policies are very limited on collections of any type, especially replacement value.

Maklershed 01-20-07 12:08 PM

I forgot about this thread :P

Thanks for the excel suggestion with the dvd location. I think I'll try that. It sounds much easier than trying to keep the stuff alphabetized.

I keep mine in binders. I live with a roomate in a small two bedroom condo and have no room to display my 2300+ title collection fully.

I have mine in 33 binders in a cabinet with a big ass master lock for security.

Mike Adams 01-21-07 12:12 PM

As I've pointed out before, my particular policy just has a dollar amount, which I think I've set at around $10,000 since I don't have much of great value, least of all my DVDs. I haven't had to test them on whether I need to have an exact inventory of what I lost, but if something catastrophic happened, as I understand it they'd just come out and make a determination of how much I'd get. Keep in mind that this is just a renter's policy, hence the low coverage figure, which is only for my stuff, not the building itself.

Nice set up....I'm looking to set mine up close to how you have yours but I have around 1200 dvds and almost half are box sets. Could u tell me roughly how many each billy case holds and how many per shelf? Thanks

starseed1981 01-22-07 03:46 PM

I have 5 Case Logic 300 disc binders. In my experience, they don't damage the discs & are a great space saver. Of course when I get a bigger place I'll pull the cases out of there boxes for display.

I've got about 50 per shelf, with mixed packaging with the majority being standard DVD cases. 8 shelves x 50 per = 400 +/- per bookcase. Don't forget to get 2 extra shelves per bookcase bought.
