Criterion Question

Being new to this Forum, I have seen a lot of references to Criterion DVD's. Just out of curiosities sake, will someone please tell me the significance, or what is special about them?

Just an interesting tidbit that was in their last blog: they recently purchased www.criterion.com, so you can access the site using that web address, as well.

To answer your question, besides the quality of films themselves and excellent transfers, many people believe that Criterion set the standard for DVD extras....excellent commentaries...alternative cuts...etc

Also, unlike everybody else, they actually put forth the time and effort to create iconic and well-designed covers.

I find that Wikipedia is a pretty good resource for such questions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Criterion_Collection

The Criterion Collection is a privately held company which produces and releases authoritative consumer versions of "important classic and contemporary films" on DVD. It was established in 1984 as a joint venture between Janus Films and the Voyager Company.
