Criterion announces The Thief of Bagdad (1940)
This is not much of a surprise given Criterion's recent relationship with the Korda catalog, but Criterion seems to be officially announcing that The Thief of Bagdad (1940) will be joining the collection. It is worth noting that the picture is labeled "wackygenie2.jpg." More films directed by Michael Powell (at least partially) are always welcome additions to the Criterion Collection.

You beat me by two minutes. How did you post the image from the Criterion newsletter into your thread? If I try it just shows the link/location of the image, but no image. You think I'd know this after so many years on this forum....

That is the format. You can also click "Go Advanced" and select the "Insert Image" button. The button looks like a mountain with a sun above it. Then paste the image's url and click the "Insert Image" button again.

Wow... the old MGM disc is OOP and going for $40+???
Huh. I had no clue. Got that sitting on the shelf right now. I'd have to assume that this Criterion edition would also include the 1924 silent version. Could be a real great package.

The MGM disc is a pretty good looking disc. It will be interesting to see the improvments made. Guess I should list mine on eBay pronto.
The 1924 film does have a good KINO release....there is also a good IMAGE/BLACKHAWK disc out there that is probably out-of-print. I understand that Photoplay has done a restoration...that would be cool if they added that to the package.

I'm just curious what Criterion would bring to the table. And I have to assume that they'd include this.

This could be a very special release indeed of an early three-strip technicolor masterpiece. If they could avoid any registration problems with the elements the color should look fantastic.
It really is the best 'Arabian Nights' style fantasy on film and Rex Ingram is the definitive model for all great genies to come.
