Spectacular flick. Definite buy for me!

I absolutely loved this film and I cannot wait for the dvd to come!!! Probably my favorite movie of the year so far.

Cornelius1047 12-18-06 11:44 AM

I seriously don't know who benefits from a full screen release of this movie. Just like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Lost In Translation, it just doesn't seem like this type of movie appeals to the consumer who would refuse to buy it if it didn't come in a modified version. But whatever.

I thought it was really good. Definitely on my Top 10 for the year. Although, it wasn't as good as I was expecting. I guess Gondry's Eternal Sunshine spoiled me, but then again, that did have Charlie Kaufman's (award-winning) screenplay behind it.

Great news from Amazon!

Nobody reported this, for some reason...curious.

I am thrilled, I was deathly afraid Warner would deny Gondry a commentary but this DVD sounds fantastic. I can't wait, only a few weeks away from getting one of my favorite films of 2006.

I got a copy from work last week, excellent movie. The featurettes are pretty interesting as well, the first time in a while that i haven't turned them off from being bored.

What a bizarre little movie. I liked it, although Stephane drove me up the wall. My girlfriend and I saw it in the theater.

The cover of the DVD sucks. I know, I know... poster art. The poster art wasn't great, either. I think it would be better if the cover was a scene from Disasterology. A little like the Wes Anderson Criterion releases.

can't wait. I expected not much in terms of extras.

Fincher Fan 01-31-07 09:17 AM

Sweet! I hope the HD release isn't far behind!

tylergfoster 01-31-07 11:07 AM

The only way it could be better is I heard he made some videos for the film's website, if those were included it'd be perfect but given the commentary I am really not complaining.

wennma01 01-31-07 11:52 AM

i even posted in this thread, yet i completed forgot that it was coming out. thanks for the reminder.

ign has a very positive review up.
looks like no big first week discounts on this title

Best Buy has a decent price:

The Science Of Sleep >>>> $16.99

tylergfoster 02-02-07 03:46 PM

Where did that price come from, the website or is it confirmed as the in-store price?

manicsounds 02-04-07 06:15 AM

via Speedy in the bargains forum,
now amazon has lowered their price to $16.99, very nice.

So if I loved Eternal Sunshine, will I enjoy this as well?

tylergfoster 02-06-07 06:13 PM

Perhaps. The general consensus seems to be that Science of Sleep is darker, but if you've seen Gondry's "Director's Works" set or his music videos, you know what the film will look like and personally I found it to be a happy if bittersweet film (slightly less cynical than ESOTSM in my opinion).

GREAT news for people who loved this movie: In short, there is a complete version of this film from beginning to end that we haven't seen. It will be out on March 20th in France...

From a French website (translated through Babel Fish, cleaned up a bit by me):

Michel Gondry [was very free] with his actors (Gael Garcia Bernal, Alain Chabat and Charlotte Gainsbourg), encouraging their creativity and their improvisations and thus turning [out] many versions of each scene of film. Rather than to [present this footage as a "general"] alternate scenes [section], which would have been immense and disordered, the [director] decided for the DVD to assemble a completely alternate version, "the Film B". [The only supplement of its kind]! This film B profited from a technical treatment of [the highest quality] and should have the same quality of image as original film. It will be even available in HD 1080p (MPEG 4) on the Blu-Ray edition!

Sounds like something worth importing. The links below will also detail two DVD covers (one including a cardboard television screen cutout on the front). It would be massively depressing if this "Film B" is not presented with English subtitles, but since the movie is mostly in English anyway, it might even then still be worth watching. I loved this film and I can't wait to get ahold of this, because I have trouble imagining that Warner Independent will release this version in the US (it would be hard to explain, I think, and an even harder sell).

Anyone have any French retailers to reccomend? Amazon FR doesn't have the cooler slipcover version...

Cosmic Bus 02-13-07 05:00 PM

It is unlikely that this new French disc will include subtitles...

tylergfoster 02-14-07 12:42 AM

Unlikely? Why?

animatedude 02-14-07 04:04 AM

hmmm i wonder if this will find its way on the R2UK disc.

French R2 dvds almost never have English subtitles - maybe 5% of the time.
