Bond Movies
 

I own a couple of the bond movies and was planning on buying the Bond Collection, but then i realized that they were set of only 4 dvds, which is way too expensive. So, i was curious what do these offer rather than just buying the normal dvds?

Well, first of all they're 5 films each, not 4.

Secondly, they're all restored and each one has a second disc packed with extras.

Third, they only cost $50-60 each so you're paying $10-12 each for fully-loaded special editions.

Finally, buying them individually isn't really an option. The individual releases are long gone and if you do find them on eBay or something you're gonna end up paying roughly the same amount for vastly inferior releases, and while there are individual releases planned in the future they're only gonna be selected Bond titles and they'll all drop the second disc, and I doubt they'll be much less than $10-12 either.

My advice? Unload the individual releases you have (there are people who want to complete their sets of the older editions) and just buy the 4 new box sets. It's a big chunk of change at the end of the day but it's worth it, you're getting all 20 films plus 20 bonus discs.

If you have the <b>Goldeneye</b> and <b>Die Another Day</b> SE's, keep them because the new versions are not as good. According to the discussion in the HTF, the picture quality on the Region 2 version of the new <b>Goldeneye</b> two disc set is horribly cropped and this is believed to be the case in the Region 1 version.

The new <b>Die Another Day</b> is lacking all the features on the old 2 disc set save for the audio commentaries. The new 2 disc set has a nice 50 minute documentary but other than that, there's not much else.

In addition, the opening title sequence of <b>The World is not Enough</b> is windowboxed for some strange reason, making the images look squeezed.

If you've actually been following that thread you'd know that the "Goldeneye" UE framing is DIFFERENT than when compared to the SE framing but to say that the UE framing is incorrect you have to assume that the SE framing is correct which is a pretty foolish assumption.

Unless you compare both DVD editions to a theatrical print there's no telling which one actually got it right. As it stands the UE is cropped more but there is no evidence that any essential visual information is missing so there's really no telling which one is right, though I trust the current team at Lowry much more than I trust MGM's technicians from 6 years ago.

The moral of the story? Never assume that the previous DVD edition is correct.

Definitely get the new sets. They're incredible, despite minor packaging flaws.
