Ideas and categories for the best of 2006 according to us

with the end of the year approaching, i was thinking it might be a fun route to do a small project over here at dvdtalk, similar to Scott Weinberg's Top DVDs of 2005, According to US if anyone cares to take the reigns, if Scott doesn't plan on doing it again. I would love to be the one to tally the votes, etc. but my January is going to be pretty solid, and I don't want it to end up like the 2005 census with no results to show.

thought it might be fun to create a few categories for the years best of. While I know everyone has their choices for best of the year, please hold on the titles and lets just brainstorm categories. This way we have some straightforward categories, as opposed to just a top 5-10 of the year. Let me know thoughts and so on, and i suppose first person to say they want it has it.

The post should take place following the last Tuesday (release Day) in December and should be closed sometime in January, to allow people time to watch some of those late in the year titles and Xmas presents.

i was thinking as well as a top ten with a points system, we could do some straightforward one vote questions along the lines of

Best Easter Egg

Biggest Letdown

Actor/actress/director best represented in 2006

etc.

nah, its no big deal. I just know that once everybody starts in on what is and isn't the best that the thread will go that way, and it should be reserved for when the actual list comes to be

Best Barebones (w/ little to no extras or Best Single Disc)

Best Limited Edition (that truly was Limited)

Best Extended or Director's Cut

Best Criterion (since many consider them in a league of their own, it might be fun to just pick the best of this bunch this year)

Best Hyped Release

Best Value (meaning i guess the best overall DVD that was the cheapest price come that Tuesday's release day at major retailers and major online outlets; not taking into account using discounts, coupons, etc.. "Superman Ultimate" at $69.99 is an example, not the $50.00 that many of us got it at Barnes and Noble)

Best Long-Awaited

Best Foreign Release (that is R1)

Greg613 12-09-06 11:51 AM

ACTOR-The Superman Actors(TIE)(Sorry Bond, but Supes had a LOT of releases)

TNA,
just to let you know the Ultimate Bond Collections with roughly 4 actors playing Bond probably at least doubled the Superman releases.

Cameron 12-09-06 12:27 PM

well...when i say best represented i mean, most (relevent) titles for a certain person, spread across multiple releases.

a good example for this year would be Boris Karloff. With two box sets with never released titles on the univesal franchise set, and icons of horror set, as well as a new edition of Frankenstein

or Peckinpah and John Ford with their respective box sets and A new version of Cross of Iron that got it mostly right.

I would also have to say (and I'm picking on TNA Jason again) that the "tie" should be thrown out completly, save for certain movie franchises. THe Bond series could be counted as one title, as could the new star wars dvds. However you can't have a tie between superman and james bond. you would only get one vote, and for anyone who put two the top one would count.

we could also have anyone add an honorable mention to the category, just so they have it down for everyone to see

i think we could go on forever with best genre dvd's and thus propose not to have each individual genre and keep it more general.

I liked that cat you did last year like: "best releases you haven't heard of" or something like that, with the hopalong cassidy coverage. I found a lot of great stuff from that list. The year end lists last year were top notch, keep up the great work.

I agree. A simple "Top 10 DVD's for 2006" or something like that. Take everything into account like packaging, transfer, extras, etc.
