Is there a list of Widescreen non-anamorphic titles?
 

I hate getting non-anamorphic widescreen, but sometimes there is no other choice.
So far I've found out the hard way about...

Anyone know of any others?

I don't think so, but are there any specific titles your interested in buying? It may be easier.

Why are you interested in these (just curious). Just trying to dodge a bullet?

If i'm not mistaken, he's looking for an online list of non-anamorphic DVD titles, so could prevent from buying them in the future, after purchasing some unknowingly. He very well much prefers anamorphic transfers.

Wouldn't it make more sense to simply look online at dvd reviews for movies you're interested in before you buy them? God knows there's more than enough information online to make an informed decision.

True. I just thought it might be easier to look at a list and know what to avoid or just so it won't come as a suprise, especially if there are multiple versions of the same title.

I spent some time depressed of late....as I weeded out a few duds from my library. I realized that before I bought my first HDTV a few years ago, I really did not care what was anamorphic and what was not. On my standard TV's...it made not much difference. But since buying WS TV's...anything not anamorphic/enhanced for 16:9 are totally worthless. Sure, I could viddey them downstairs on the standard 36"....but thats nuts. I had to pass on the Star Wars original cuts for that reason. Just not worth it. It makes me sick to my tummy to watch a box, within a box...within a box. Yuk.

So I ended up pulling over 40 dvds out that are in bad need of upgrading. It's all so sad. And trust me....there are more that I have not found yet. One of these days, I plan on posting a list of non 16:9 dvds that I own....but can't stand to own any longer.:(

Sorry for the mini-rant....but this thread made those sicking memories resurface....again.:grunt:

non anamorphic region 1 discs....Scream, The Game, Armageddon, Good Will Hunting, Ransom, The Abyss. :mad:

Well, here's one I REALLY want in anamorphic form....Escape from L.A. I was hoping the repackage would be anamorphic, but, alas it is not.

Sayonara (1957) and How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying (1967) are two classics that are screaming out for a 16.9 reissue on DVD.

Also Ladyhawke. Warner Bros. really needs to revisit that title.

Bridge at Remagen R1 - my disc skipped in several chapters, want to replace it but surely hope anamorphic would appear....

If I'm suspicious about a title I want, I sometimes check DVDProfiler with the understanding that it's not always acurate.

Widescreen Review has a search engine that will give a list. According to them, there are currently 1153 DVDs that are non-anamorphic. :mad:

It is most annoying buying DVD movies that "claim" wide-screen and then find out that they are Non-Anamorphic..

The Alliance/Canadian R1 release of Good Will Hunting is Anamorphic and has some extra features on it-

I agree there are just some films that I've wanted in my collection and they are not Anamorphic which SUCKS IMO too but as you say there is no other choice if you want those films!

It's tough when a lot of the packing doesn't specify 16:9 or "Enhanced for Widescreen TVs". They just say "Widescreen" or "Letterbox" but don't say whether it's 16:9 anamorphic or 4:3.

I recently discovered that The Presidio is non-anamorphic. It's a predictable, clichéd story anyway, and being in non-anamorphic WS just made it an even more tedious experience.

I have found that with my 32-inch Sony Bravia flatscreen set, the question of whether a disc is anamorphic or not is often a moot point. I have to watch most widescreen DVDs in "normal" mode, which means a rectangle in the middle of the screen surrounded by black on all sides, which essentially makes my 32-inch screen a 22-inch screen. Most discs look fuzzy in anamorphic mode or are cropped a little on all sides. With subtitled discs, the subtitles are cut off when played in anamorphic mode.

The only discs I have that play just fine in full anamorphic mode are Hollywood releases from the 1960s and '70s. These include the films in my Elvis and Beach Party sets, the Dean Martin comedy set (HOW TO SAVE A MARRIAGE AND RUIN YOUR LIFE looks fantastic), and the John Wayne western, CHISUM. That's not a lot. And there are an equal number of others I have from that period that don't look good in anamorphic (e.g. THE SAND PEBBLES). I don't have many Hollywood films in my collection more recent than that. At least that I've watched.
