Criterion re-releasing Salo in 2007

From the Criterion blog:

http://www.criterionco.com/blog/index.html

There was a new print of Salo (with 50 minutes of previously unseen footage) at this years Venice Film Festival.

Don't know if any of the new footage will be on the disc. I can't imagine anything more depressing than a 3 hour cut of this film.

Anyway, the Ebay-ers will be none too happy.

Salo in HD??? Holy crap!

yeah...now all the ebay buyers can fuck off and die.

Still miffed they are not releasing in HD DVD or Blu-Ray, but oh well. At least we can now see feces eating without paying through the ass.

fixed :D

Plus no more "How can I tell I got a legit copy?" threads. Well, hopefully.

I've read descriptions of this movie, and I can't for the life of me ever bring myself to watch it......SD, HD, BR, or otherwise.

This is the best news I've heard all year. I've been kicking myself for, like, ever for not buying this when it first came out. I've had to live with the old laserdisc lo these many years and it been, like, torture.

Yeah, Passolini films can be tough pills to swallow. I've seen a couple (Gospel According to Matthew, Arabian Nights). I imagine the one that supposedly got him murdered must be a chore to endure.

This is really great news for people who want to buy Salo at an affordable cost, and all the ebayers who auction off fake versions, and sell legit copys at ridiculous prices there can be none to pleased with this news. The white ring disc with the "nimbus" logo still will probably fetch around $200 or so on Ebay I would imagine after this release (collectors like to own the original all the time).

I was at DVDbeaver and the transfer for the CC looked pretty crappy. I'd hate to be that guy who spent $1,000 or so on the old Criterion Collection DVD on Ebay (watch out for throwing chairs for this news). :)

great news

I imported the region 2 a few years ago, 50 extra minutes,

let's get it!

GatorDeb 11-23-06 12:30 PM

I've been waiting years to watch this

GoldenJCJ 11-23-06 12:53 PM

This has always been one of those wierd cases where I wanted it because I couldn't have it. Now that it looks like I can have it, I'm not sure I want it.

ChristianB 11-23-06 12:55 PM

I sold mine for $450

In 2007, feces will be back on the menu! Sweet!

Julie Walker 11-23-06 01:13 PM

hahaha,now that's a tagline!

I've always wanted to see the film,so this is great news.

IG80Nate 11-23-06 02:08 PM

Thank sweet jesus i did NOT bite the bullet and pay a ton for it a couple of years ago, as I was planning to. And I'm not even a huge fan of the movie, but rather just a Criterion completionist.

PopcornTreeCt 11-23-06 02:21 PM

Great news. Now owning the entire collection is actually feasible.

Fok 11-23-06 02:30 PM

wasn't interested in seeing the movie when I first heard about it. But with all the hype, one can not help wanting to see it :(

Sondheim 11-23-06 04:25 PM

I don't think I'll ever want to own this movie, but my (morbid) curiousity will probably get the best of me and I'll have to give it a rent...

I second that motion. The only difficult will be convincing my girlfriend that I'm not mentally disturbed by renting it.

fliggil 11-23-06 07:11 PM

The only reason I watched Salo once was for a paper I was writing; I can't imagine any reason for ever wanting to watch this again. It's great social commentary, Pasolini was a gifted artist, but I don't think I'll ever bring myself to watch it again - especially with 50 MORE minutes.

mickey65 11-23-06 07:18 PM

I've never seen it, but I'm curious - what is this movie about??
