DVDS with unlisted commentaries?

Save The Tiger has a commentary track with director John Avildson and writer Steve Shagen, but it is not listed on the back as a special feature. Are there other films like this, with unlisted commentaries, or other substantial (non-Easter Egg) special feautres?

Alan Smithee 10-12-06 07:22 PM

There's a commentary on Sizzle Beach USA that isn't listed anywhere. I almost put it on the shelf without having listened to it, but I got it out to check something else on it and found it. Usually the first thing I do when starting a movie is hit the Audio button to see just how many audio tracks are there, but somehow I didn't catch this one right away.

There's a few other movies that have commentaries that aren't listed on the cover, but they are at least shown on the menu.

The Simpsons sets have a few bonus unlisted commentaries

Sleeping Beauty (Disney) had a commentary which was unlisted.

GreenVulture 10-12-06 10:13 PM

Michael Mann has a commentary on Collateral, which is nowhere to be found on the packaging.

Panda Phil 10-13-06 01:49 AM

The original release of Apollo 13.

And I don't believe I saw anything listed on just released The Little Mermaid packaging.

nemein 10-13-06 06:16 AM

Unless it has changed I believe the commentary on Jacob's Ladder isn't mentioned on the packaging.

Most of the original Universal releases that had commentary tracks didn't make any mention of them on the back of the case. Instead there was a sticker on the wrapper noting the disc's extras. Once you opened it and threw away the wrapper, you had no clue what there was on the disc.

Winchester '73 has a commentary with Jimmy Stewart! The back cover lists it as an interview.

Mike Adams 10-13-06 05:52 PM

I believe the DVD "'Weird Al' Yankovic LIVE" has commentaries on the bonus music videos as a kind of easter egg.

Mondo Kane 10-13-06 05:54 PM

The Alamo ('04)

wd40cloud 10-13-06 06:36 PM

The Bourne Supremacy

Dodgeball Unrated contains the regular Dodgeball commentary as an easter egg. The Unrated commentary is listed on the box, but the regular commentary is on the DVD as well.

Unlisted DVD Commentaries you didn't know existed? (Collateral/Bruno)

There have been 2 DVDs where I only discovered their audio commentaries by chance:

1. Bruno (Universal) - I wouldn't have known it existed if I hadn't read DVD Talk's review before renting it.

2. Collateral (Dreamworks) - I love this film, I tend to like Mann's commentaries, I've had the DVD for a while and watched it several times in that period. But I never knew it had a commentary until relatively recently chancing upon it in the audio/language set-up menu. That is the only place it's listed. The back cover? Nope, no hint of it. The Special Features menu? Actually, I don't know if there is one on Disc 1. And retailer sites like DVD Empire only list the features from the back cover:

City Of Night: The Making of Collateral
Visual FX: High-speed action on the MTA Train
Mann rehearsing Cruise and Foxx
Special Delivery: Tom Cruise gets into character, and more!
Usually "...and more!" means "worthless shit".

So, I would like to know if there are any other DVDs with "unadvertised" commentaries. Have Universal or Dreamworks done this with other releases? If there are enough, perhaps we should make a list. I know Collateral has one of my favorite Mann commentaries, I'd hate to think I never would have discovered it.

LIST:

1. Bruno (Universal)
2. Collateral (Dreamworks)

The superbit of Spider-Man has the commentary track with Toby McGuire and J.K. Simmons that was broadcast supposedly live on the net. I had recorded that commentary when it "aired" and was pleasantly surprised when I discovered it on the disc. Oddly, I don't think all copies of the superbit has the track. Maybe later pressings?

Wallace and Gromit in: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Jiminy Glick in Lalawood (not one, but two unadvertised tracks)

I remember this happened frequently in 2005, when I worked at Blockbuster. I rented several discs to see if they had surprise commentaries and many from Universal did.

Weird Al Yankovic Live!

Commentaries by Yankovic on both the music videos. Not only not advertised, but not on the menu either. You have to change the audio track once the video starts to hear it.

some movies have commentaries that you can't even select from the dvd menus. you have to change the audio manually on the remote.

i think there was a disney animation (aladdin or home on the range?) like that.

Weren't some of the early Criterions like that? At least they gave instructions on how to access the commentary.

This is where my obsessiveness pays off- whenever I get a new disc, first thing I do is check ALL available audio tracks (as well as subtitles), provided the Audio button hasn't been locked out- if it has, I scan it on my computer and find out that way. I've stated elsewhere on this forum how thorough I am with my discs, had a lot of "WTF?" reactions :)

The one DVD where I almost missed an unlisted commentary was Troma's "Sizzle Beach USA", which I got when they had all their titles for 25 cents each back in 1999. The commentary isn't listed anywhere on the menus or cover, and somehow I didn't know there were 2 audio tracks on it til I got it out a 2nd time.

"Garfield: The Movie" doesn't list its commentary anywhere on the cover- I only bought that because one of my friends worked on it.

Ah, I recall some, if I remember correctly both Futurama and The Simpsons have secret 2nd audio commentaries on random episodes.

The Chemical Brothers Singles 93-03 DVD has a commentary on the Elektrobank video, by Spike Jonze. (which most likely isn't him....)

The Simpsons discs have secret menus to get to the 'hidden' commentaries (they involve pushing numbers on one of the menus, or something like that) but of course you can also just get to them with the Audio button.
