UNIVERSAL to re-release out-of-print DVD's -10/06

Great news from Universal Studios that comes straight out of left field. The studio has announced an October promotion that will see a number of its out-of-print and collectible boxed sets hitting store shelves once again - some even with lower price points! Maybe there's still hope in seeing ultra-rare sets like "Jarhead," "Munich" and "United 93" one day as well without shelling out eBay prices.

Among the titles due on October 31st are Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Epic Series (Cylon Head, $59.98), Cinderella Man: 2-Disc Collector's Edition ($29.98), Jurassic Park & The Lost World Deluxe Edition ($69.98), The Monster Legacy DVD Gift Set (Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man + Mini-Busts, $49.98), Ray: 2-Disc Limited Edition ($29.98), Bob Hope: The Road Show Series ($19.98), Scarface Gift Set ("Scarface" 1932 + Money Clip, $34.98) and Van Helsing: Ultimate Edition ($29.98).

rotfl rotfl so true!

I'll be getting the RAY: 2 Disc Limited Edition... and hopefully they re-release the Jarhead 2 disc also... since I like these movies alot and love DVD extras.

I already have Munich 2disc... Don't care for the others listed.

BTW, the Best Buy I went to yesterday had like 10 copies of the United 93 2 disc, but don't care for it.

Tower Records...

good news, as i wanted that bob hope set

wonder if these will be in stores, or online only

Mr. Cinema 09-25-06 09:12 PM

I have all of the legacy sets, but I would still repurchase to get the busts...

Yeah, I've been wanting this set as well. Do you guys know what the difference between these 2 sets?

I think the second link the one you guys are talking about? Found them for sale on Amazon.

I had high hopes of a new Universal trend, but I'm extremely dissapointed after seeing what titles are coming back. Most of these titles never went out of stock on online retailers and those that were actually discontinued, like Ray, were easily available in the secondary market. The only one with some appeal may be the Monter Legacy collection, since it became hard to get in good condition.

I'm with fitprod on this; which retailer returned unsold stock and my guess is Tower Record along with Blockbuster Video.

the first link goes to the newer in print franchise collection which is on the dreaded dvd-18 everyone screams about

the second is the original set on 4 disc in 4 keepcases.

tower has had these in stock forever, at the price of 39.99 (full msrp) so I passed.

animatedude 09-26-06 03:06 AM

wouldn't be great if the Scarface included in the rerelease of the Gift Set is the new release?

Dane 09-26-06 06:46 AM

I heard Universal would make a second batch of Munich LE. Not sure if it actually happens.

marty888 09-26-06 08:23 AM

Deep Discount has had a few of these listed at the lower price with the new "release" date for a few weeks now. (There is/was a thread in the Bargains forum.)

KFelon 09-26-06 09:16 AM

Whats the point in anything being a limited edition or limited print if they're just going to re-produce them again.

drindustrial 09-26-06 09:32 AM

The busts are cool for the Monster Legacy set, but aren't Dracula and Frankenstein obselete now with the brand new 75th Anniversary editions just released today?

David,
They're not obsolete, as the sequels (especially Bride of Frankenstein!) are not available elsewhere... They're just redundant.

I doubt these are new printings - they're just overstock from the first run. I know the Scarface set was limited, but since when has ANYBODY had a hard time finding it?

AJH 09-26-06 09:48 AM

I hope they don't re-release Munich. I've got an unopened 2-disc edition I'm still looking to unload for a nice amount at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Nebiroth 09-26-06 10:16 AM

Oh good. Wouldn't want them to be wasting their time releasing new stuff when they can just repeat what they've already done (and got people to buy under the premise of it being a "Limited Edition")!

Cameron 09-26-06 11:39 AM

yah, i got a feeling this is the returns from Tower Records, and everyone else who was freeing up shelf space for XMAS

runnersdialzero 09-26-06 11:42 AM

I got excited when I read the thread title. But when I opened it I was hoping for OOP titles like Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie.

Well, that may be true, but it is not quite as interesting to me now that Dracula and Frankenstein have these amazing new versions. Still like the busts, though....

The Scarface set actually did sell out the first month it was out, but then a ton more were printed and they can't sell them all. I got one at Fry's the year before last for $19.99!

alfonsosoriano 09-26-06 05:36 PM

I'm so getting the Monsters Set with Busts.

BuckNaked2k 09-26-06 05:45 PM

Will the Ray SE be fixed, or will it still have that dreadful anamorphic/non-anamorphic seamless branching?

rabbit138 09-27-06 03:49 AM

:fc:
this is fantastic news for me,
ive been meaning to track down that cylon head forever..
but the best i could find was $80, & i just never set aside the $..
then i also heard something about people receiving
a korean version instead from some amazon marketplace sellers..
but if its back on stores shelves, i shouldnt have to worry about that!
now if i can just sqeeze it into my budget.. hmm..

my monster legacy set is still holding up!
personally, i wouldve liked to have seen the other monster legacy dvds
released in a similar set.. but then busts of the mummy
& the invisible man might look too similar..? oh well..
