Bernardo Bertolucci's THE CONFORMIST

via DVDACTIVE:

December 5th

Further Details:
Paramount Home Entertainment has sent over artwork for an extended edition of The Conformist (Il Conformista) which stars Jean-Louis Trintignant. This 1970 Bernardo Bertolucci drama will be available to own from the 5th December this year. The full specs have yet to be revealed for this one I'm afraid, although we are able to confirm that it will be presented in its original aspect ratio - and not 4:3 as initally feared. We'll bring you the full details just as soon as we have them. For now though, here's the artwork:

Ah, very nice. Just finished watching a DVD-R of the TCM showing from last weekend. I wonder what the runtime will be? The TCM version was about 107 minutes, but there should be 115- and 120-minute versions available as well.

SWEET!!!

This will be a blind buy for me.

wendersfan 09-08-06 05:20 PM

Well it's about fucking time.

nitin77 09-08-06 07:33 PM

brilliant news.

cgray 09-08-06 08:31 PM

sweeet.

philo 09-08-06 09:38 PM

Wow that came out of nowhere. Fantastic! Both this and Criterions Double Life of Veronique have been the best news all year.

C'mon Paramount release Lindsay Anderson's if... next please! You can do it!

2 questions:

1. It says "extended edition," is it a director approved cut or some ridiculous studio cut?

2. Is it anamorphic?

pro-bassoonist 09-09-06 02:35 AM

1. I could only guess what the final specs will be (you and I will have to wait and see what those are once they get confirmed by the studio). This being said there is a longer uncensored European cut which I believe is slightly longer than the US version. Also, there is a slightly longer "sanitazied", restored, European cut which is also a bit longer than the US cut. The second version (the sanitized one) was actually done back in 1994, not 1995 as the IMDB lists and I am pretty sure we will NOT be getting it. The longer and newly restored by the Italian distribs cut (and I am going to guess here that this is what Paramount have their hands on) which is the complete version Bertolucci approved is what the US should be getting.

The only very possible gaffe I see here is Paramount unleashing a non-anamorphic 1.66:1 print. Very likely scenario!

Hopefully I am wrong on count 2.

And it sounds like Bertolucci's 1900 is in the pipeline, as well. From a posting on IMDB:

The news actually came from 20th century Fox in London. e-mail this woman there about it:

[email protected]

Vicki said that Paramount are now compiling the extras for their release of Bertolucci's "1900," due late 06 or early 07. They own the U.S/ Canadian rights.
Fox owns the UK rights, and were just about to print the UK DVD in October without extras. Then, Fox heard that Paramount are doing extras on their U.S DVD & so they decided to wait until those extras are ready so Fox can include them in their now Special Edition UK DVD.

So Fox decided, & I agree with them, that it'll be better that they do the Special edition with extras & get it out in Feb 2007, as opposed do a DVD in October, with nothing but scene selection.
Granted, we all should know not to take anything on IMDB seriously, but this certainly comes off as more credible than most.

Very glad to see this coming out. Been a long time since I have seen this movie, but it's a really good one so...looks like yet another to add to my Bertolucci collection.

Digital Bits is reporting 1900 for 12/05/06 as a 2 disc SE.

Also, Paramount has announced the 12/5 release of Bernado Bertolucci's 1900 as a 2-disc special collector's edition. Additional details will follow as they're available.

the stars must have realigned - the NC-17 rated cut... whoah!

NoirFan 10-15-06 10:15 PM

From davisdvd.com:
"We've received final details for Paramount's upcoming release of Bernardo Bertolucci's classic The Conformist (Il Conformista). Due on December 5th, the film arrives with an anamorphic widescreen transfer of the restored extended cut, along with Italian & English Dolby Digital Mono tracks and optional English subtitles. Bonus materials include the three-part documentary "The Rise of The Conformist: The Story, the Cast," "Shadow and Light: Filming The Conformist" and "The Conformist: Breaking New Ground." Retail is a low $14.99."

I'll be interested to see if this is a restored version as I already have the Aussie release that came out a few months back...which is the longer cut with an english language track.

...never seen the conformist, I'll definately be checking it out :)

Dr. Mantle 11-27-06 04:07 PM

Are there any reviews out yet for the Conformist or 1900? They're coming out a week from tomorrow. (Either way I'll buy them sight unseen, but it's always nice to read a review first.)

I am working on 1900, and am almost done! You could fire away though...it is a great set and better looking than the R2/R4.

nice, I have been very interested in seeing this film

DVD Polizei 11-28-06 12:25 AM

A 1.66:1 print would fit better on a widescreen LCD monitor. :D

g 11-28-06 02:11 AM

As soon as DDD has one of their Paramount sales, I'll buy this. The last Paramount sale made me regret buying any Paramount dvd's at a higher price.
