1. Population 436 ** Bad start. I put this in the Netflix queue because the trailer was pretty cool and it has Jeremy Sisto in it who I always like. This is kind of a mish-mash of "The Village" and Shirley Jackson's story "The Lottery" with no compelling suspense and ill-defined internal logic. Surprisingly, Fred Durst doesn't suck as a deputy.
2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ***** The perfect palate cleanser! Not much to say about this one that hasn't been said before. The new Dark Sky DVD is awesome!

Question: The TV show "Supernatural" - certainly a horror base. I plan on watching the entire season in October. So.. would each episode count as a title a' la "Masters Of Horror"??

Depending on how many hours you work, it's pretty easy to squeeze in 2 or 3 movies a night. And let's be honest, there aint that many horror movies out there that surpass 120 mins.

The title of the thread is "Horror Movie." I personally would not include it nor the Masters of Horror TV series.

I certainly would count Masters of Horror, as they are standalone movies. Short movies, sure, but movies nonetheless.

Not trying to be argumentative here but if those are considered movies, how about episodes of Freddy's Nightmares? They were approx 47 minutes and were standalone stories. There were several TV shows over 40 minutes long with standalone stories like this...should they be included?

Hell, go ahead & include The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Tales From The Darkside, etc. All miniature 30 minute movies.

Ok, I am in. I just bought all 4 Fright Pack collections from DVDPlanet and I have my entire Universal Horror collections. That will give me roughly 50+. I wish I had thought about this before I did my entire Jason series last month.

Update:
I have decided to set a personal goal since I feel the likelyhood of getting to 100 is slim to none for me. I will shoot for 70. That is two movies on work nights and three on off nights. I will try to squeeze in an extra 30 somewhere, but I don't think I will make it. If I make my goal, it will knck out almost all the backlog horror I have so it is a big plus as I am on a get rid of the backlog kick. I was up to like 300 no counting TV shows.

So I decided to do something for the Challenge that I have been thinking about for a bit now. I am going to try to do a Chronogoly of Horror, tracking the genre from the 1920s silents to modern day releases. Should be an interesting trip.

Also, Chad, feel free to place the DVD I'm placing up for grabs to the winner of this year's challenge. I thought I'd keep it hush hush until Oct. 1st but I'll put it out there now to see if we can drum up more viewers this year. Up for grabs is what some say to be the first horror flick:

A few comments that need addressing:

Last year people were complaining because we weren't going to initially include commentaries but later changed it! But, I do see what you're saying and think putting a limit of around 3 for the entire contest would a reasonable one. Is everyone else in agreement?

A very common question that always manages to pop up...usually more than once. Again, this is about having fun so if you can only squeeze in a couple for the entire month then that's absolutely fine.

Personally I have both a full-time job and a fairly active social life, yet still managed to work in 130 movies last time around. It's all about good time management...I watch far less television than I used too and I'm a certified insomniac, so I use those two situations to my advantage. You might just be surprised at how many you can watch in a given month if you really put forth the effort.

I don't see any reason we shouldn't count Masters of Horror because they are movies after all. Let's not forgot there's quite an abundance of horror films from back in the day that barely have a running time of an hour...if that. I recently caught a couple of Bela Lugosi films ("The Devil Bat" & "Scared to Death") on TCM and both barely run over the 60 min mark.

Now that's stretching it a bit, IMHO. I realize it's over the 40-minute mark but it's a television series and this is supposed to be about movies. That's 22(?) episodes from just one television season that would qualify if we counted them. Come on, we gotta draw the line somewhere people!


Look, there's no way we can satisfy everyone. But, the fact of the matter is we have 25 days until this thing starts and nothing is set in stone, so surely we can all decide on something that everyone will agree on by then!
