I just got a laser disk player; advice?
 

Forgive me if this has been covered recently or this is the wrong forum, but here goes.

I just stumbled across a free LD player.

Any good advice on what to do with it?

I figured that I would occasionally find really cheap discs at pawn shops or on ebay maybe, but perhaps I'm wrong.

Any good links?

It's hard to find them at pawn shops anymore, or at least it has been for me. Ebay lots are the way to go, IMO. You can get tons of movies for next to nothing. Just be sure you buy from reputable sellers. LD's were a little harder to keep pristine than DVD's simply because of their size, so there are a lot of scratched and damaged discs out there.

Look on Ebay for some cheap deals on movies. That seems to be where most of them can be found these days.

As a die hard LD fan myself, I must politely correct you and let you know it's (ahem) "disc", not "disk". Of course, I'm saying this with a smile. :)

I've found some good deals at used book stores and used record stores (the second of which are becoming as hard to find as laser discs!) - they're always jammed into a shelf in the corner, or mixed in with the record albums and barely designated as different.

If you want to start off your super-rare LD collection with a bang, I've got a still-sealed mint copy of MGMs letterboxed WILD WILD PLANET that I'll sell ya for (putting pinky next to my mouth) one miiilllllliiiioooooooooon dollars. :)

thow it away...you will save some room this way for more dvds...

Sweeeet! You're gonna love it! Just call Ken Crane's laserdisc at 1-800-624-3078. They have this really cool recording that will tell you what's up and coming. OR...you can look at the top of your yellow receipt that you'll get in your UPS package for a list of what's coming.....

theres some great discs out there. lots of criterions that never got released on dvd. dracula, fisher king, baron munchausen, robinson crusoe on mars, repulsion, some with extras like commentaries that are not and may not end up on dvd. but for your major films it's pretty worthless. except a few later discs and some with dts they are mostly inferior to dvd.

lddb.com is a good place to search for info.

Don't forget the original star wars trilogy.

2) Buy some laderdiscs.
3) Profit!

If I had a LD player the very first LD that I'd try to track down for a good price would be The Game.

There still are some laserdisc titles that haven't even come to DVD yet - especially THE CRITERION COLLECTION, like

King Kong, the original Blade Runner, 2001, The Big Chill, Close Encounters,etc.

King Kong is on DVD now. I bought the Criterion Kong 3 years ago. It's a LD that is still worth collecting because it contains the very first audio commentary every presented.

Another jem out there exclusive to LD is Magnificent Ambersons CC.

There is a pawn shop near here that used to have LDs, as of a few months ago. I might check it out tomorrow while I'm out and see what they still have and how much they are.

You should try to find Mimic(DTS) and Golden Eye(DTS).

this lists most of the lasers that had a commentary. you can see many that have never made it to dvd.

I would guess there is somewhere between 3000-5000 titles on LD that are not on DVD yet. And depending on player and so, there is many hundred (thousand?) that sound or look better than the DVD version. So I think you can find some LD's to use.

LD's are cool. I'll always have an LD player hooked up to my home theatre. :)

Sorry, but you'll never know if they actually do look better than the DVD version, because a lot of signal conversion has to be done to get a Laserdisc player hooked up to an HD TV, and even then, the source is always going to be interlaced video, which must be de-interlaced. Many film-sourced DVDs are flagged progressive, and you'll see a difference on a TV capable of displaying progressive video, but not on the kind of ordinary TV that Laserdisc players will connect directly to.
