DVD's: Menu Animations

What's everyone's opinions on the animations that come up on the menu screen when you pop a DVD in?

Personally, I friggin' hate that crap. I just watched one DVD that made me wade through a whole minute of animation before I could even access 'Play'. I feel that once you put the DVD in you should be able to start the movie immediately. So annoying... and a lot of times they put spoilers in there too.

When DVD first came out I couldn't get enough of them. The Matrix was the first one that blew me away. Now I could care less if they included them or not. They just seem to get in the way now, but there are still a few good ones. I just want to get to the movie. And for God's sake can they start including the film's trailer again!?!

DonnachaOne 08-26-06 12:48 AM

How I watch a DVD.

1. Put the disc in.
2. Keep pressing "stop" so that automatic loading is prevented.
3. Press "1" for title 1, which is usually the film.

That way I avoid the animation, trailers, the superfluous studio logos and the FBI warnings that have never, ever done anything to curb piracy.

I hate it, they need to understand that some people just want to watch the movie

PopcornTreeCt 08-26-06 02:05 AM

I love the Sin City one.

Obligatory: shouldn't this be in the DVD Talk forum?

The only one I've enjoyed so far is the House of 1000 Corpses. Other than that, I really, really, don't like animated menus. If there are some, I would prefer the option to choose "play" right off the bat, with animation behind it. If I have to wait, I get a little irked.

PixyJunket 08-26-06 08:47 AM

Hate, hate, hate, HATE, HATE!

hardercore 08-26-06 08:55 AM

I love the animation for The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly SE. And Unforgiven AE, as well as the Pulp Fiction AE. There's something about getting a taste of the films score, especially if it's memorable, to get you even more hyped for the movie. I say keep it, but do not force viewers to sit through it. All animation should be able to be skipped if the viewer wishes, so it's unfortunate that this is not always the case.

There's a thread floating around about the most nerve-grating menus to leave on ... ahh here it is:

The Most Annoying DVD Menu's To Leave Running?

I think the resounding answer in this thread is "REMOVE THE @#!$#@$ THINGS IMMEDIATELY". My vote is to remove them, undoubtedly, unless they are very, very simple and non-animated.

matome 08-26-06 10:06 AM

Hate it. I just want the movie to play immediately, like it does with <i>Beetlejuice.</i> Not annoy me with repetitive crap right off the bat. It's another reason I cry for the demise of the chapter insert. "Just go to the disc chapter menu" they say. No thanks, when it takes a minute for it to load all the whooshing, kewl stuff to get to it and each new page.

I agree with you, mndtrp....HO1KC had excellent/fun menu navigation. It's one of my favorites, if not my all time favorite.

But overall, I hate most DVD menu animations.

AdamComic2 08-26-06 12:57 PM

I really don't mind them EXCEPT for when you can't skip the massively long opening montage of spoilery scenes.

PixyJunket 08-26-06 02:15 PM

The Godfather trilogy starts the film right after you put the disc in.

ALL movies should be like that. [Gary Oldman] ALL OF THEM! [/Gary Oldman]

Yeah, as long as I can skip them (via skip or menu buttons), I don't care.

lxl 08-26-06 03:12 PM

I remember it was [Gary Oldman] EVERY ONE! [/Gary Oldman]

I kind of enjoy menu animations, some of them are cute

dpz301 08-26-06 04:31 PM

i don't really mind either. i only get annoyed when i can't skip all the stuff before the play screen.

RichardW 08-26-06 05:52 PM

Some can be cool, but most are just annoying. The worst culprit is Disney. When my daughter was younger, I couldn't get to Baby Einstein fast enough because of all the trailers, warnings and logos.

tonyc3742 08-26-06 07:02 PM

I don't mind them, as long as:
* they don't spoil the program
* they're entertaining/funny/etc.
* you can either skip them, or they're very short.

If they're on a tv set, they definitely need to be skippable.

I don't necessarily want the movie to start immediately, I like to pick my audio option and check out the extras first, but I want to be able to get it to start quickly.

marty888 08-26-06 07:18 PM

I don't mind a menu that has animation activity, as long as you can hit "play" the minute the menu appears. But those <i>"Aren't we cute/clever/cutting edge"</i> animations that preclude immediate movie starts ... no way!

Darth Oiler 08-26-06 07:21 PM

Harold and Kumar's menu animation was pretty funny, and you can get out of it at any time - which is a must.
