Ciao,

Pro-B,

Have you a link to this Italian disc you speak of? I was meaning to get this a few months back, but purchased a few other Italian discs instead. I forgot about it until recently. Also, how do the extras on the Italian one compare with what is listed on the Criterion? Thanks as usual.

Here's the linky:
http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/se...ata-p-869.html

Also, I am quite sure that if you order this DVD what you will get is the newer reissue by Cristaldifilm/Fox-Italia which does not have any of the extras listed on the old cover you see above (unless Xploited has very old stock of it with the extras). With other words all 4 titles that CristaldiFilms and Fox-Italia issued are now OOP, though a few of them were re-issued as barebones discs. In fact, very few online Italian stores even sell them. Here's De Santis' disc:

The other two I did not have time to review (though Toto's disc is a riot).

Cristaldi's catalog is here and that is where Criterion are dipping in:

quote from Criterion:

Dear Jeffrey,

That information is correct. You can expect our Third Man re-release to hit streets around November.

I hope this helps, and please feel free to contact us with any future questions or concerns.

Best,

Matt Lipson

WHAT INFO DID YOU SPEAK OF....

Whats on the new disc!...This is major...

naitram 08-19-06 10:46 AM

New Third Man print? Criterion is killing me, but I'll buy it. Hopefully more Welles is on the horizon too.

More than likely, the major addition for this new edition of THE THIRD MAN will be the documentary Shadowing the Third Man, which has already been announced as an extra on the upcoming R2 re-release. Criterion may add a commentary, too.

I'm with previous posters, though. The A/V quality was extremely good -- one of the first near-perfect transfers that Criterion ever made. I guess they'll follow their recent trend and "improve" the image by windowboxing this version. (Might be worth holding onto the previous release for that reason alone....)

Ron G 08-19-06 03:53 PM

So are we to assume that the hues in Double Life will be the same as the MK2 version? Or has Criterion done its own restoration, leaving in the yellow hues (or a modified version of the yellow hues) of the VHS and LD release?

Any word on this? Or word on the content of Idziak's commentary regarding the differences between the VHS/LD and the MK2 DVD?

Ralph Jenkins 08-20-06 01:06 AM

Crap, I just picked up The Third Man on Thursday, because I thought it was going out of print. Just broke the seal on it this morning, in fact. Well, I'm glad to hear the previous release was good. I've never seen the movie, and now I won't have to wait until November.

theneobez 08-20-06 10:39 PM

Double Life of Veronique?!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
How long have we been waiting for this. . . .bless Criterion

InnocentBlood 08-21-06 01:30 AM

is the news on Third Man reliable? i mean, how come it's not part of the announcement for the Nov titles?

Spiral Staircase 08-21-06 09:31 AM

Matt Lipson is the horse's mouth. You can rely on his replies.

And after reading some reviews of recent Criterion discs with this "window-boxing" deal, I'm much less inclined to keep buying Criterion and may start searching out other-region discs. I don't really need to make my television any smaller.

Cameron 08-21-06 03:56 PM

anybody have screencaps of some window box comparisons

Wow, I definitely need that Criterion Seven Samurai.

By the way, I wrote to Tony at Xploited and was told that they did still have a couple copies of the original DVD with the extras left. So I went ahead and ordered it along with Bertolucci's Prima della Rivoluzione (2-disc) and Carne's Hotel du Nord. Thank you once again.

pro-bassoonist 08-24-06 03:15 AM

You are very welcome Amon.

I do not know Tony personally nor do I know his business well but I do know for a fact that the older version I mentioned to you is OOP at Italian vendors. I suppose you lucked out.

Ciao,
Pro-B

Cosmic Bus 09-06-06 07:24 PM

I don't believe the exact dates have been mentioned yet:

The Fallen Idol (1-disc) - Nov. 7th
Pandora's Box (2-disc) - Nov. 21st
The Double Life of Veronique (2-disc) - Nov. 21st

Also, the artwork on Pandora's Box has been changed (for the worse, in my opinion). I much prefered the close-up, cropped shot of Brooks' face instead of this full body image.

http://www.criterionco.com/content/i...ox_348x490.jpg

Still waiting to find out which four scores will be availble on the disc. Fingers crossed for the Peer Raben and Stuart Oderman versions to be there!

PopcornTreeCt 09-06-06 10:41 PM

Ugh. Right now I have the Criterion Dungeon's Pandora's Box wallpaper as my background. That new cover is not nearly as nice as the original.
