DVD's - I would like to see an option in "set-up" to omit CURSE WORDS

You know how a movie can have a lot of curse words, but when you see them on network TV, there's voice-overs changing words like 'fuck' to 'dang.'

This would be a great option to have on DVD's, when you're watching them in front of your little kids. I'm surprised this hasn't occurred yet in the industry.

I would love to hear someone attempt a voice over for Eddie Murphy's Raw. Haha. :) That would be hilarious to hear.

I think this was the one thing really missing on the Pulp Fiction DVD.

critterdvd 08-09-06 04:47 PM

If I'm not mistaken there was a special DVD player that could do this with select movies... but i don't know if it ever made it through testing (ie, i don't know if it ever went on the market)... but for family viewing for certain PG-13 movies, this would be a helpful option for families that don't want their kids to here curse words and allow the kids to see the movies...

Mr. Salty 08-09-06 05:25 PM

The way my parents handled this sort of thing was that they made me wait until I was the appropriate age to see a given movie, rather than expect the world to cater to children.

slop101 08-09-06 05:32 PM

Here's an option: Don't watch movies that have cursing when your kids are around.

BTW, I used to go to plenty of curse-filled movies with my parents when I was a pre-teen, and even though I knew the curses, my parents taught me well enough that I shouldn't use them casually, as it was beneth me, and that their use in movies is all about context and character. Now that I'm 35, I think they did okay, as I rarely curse.

Decker 08-09-06 05:36 PM

If I were a brilliant screenwriter like a Tarantino or Mamet, not only would I write far more eloquent posts in this forum, but I would also be super-pissed if the public could buy one of my films on DVD and have my carefully worded dialogue changed. I would expect that the WGA would fight any such feature. even though with TV and movie edits, it wouldn't be hard to implement.

...And about that : Why are the dialog tracks for in-flight movies edited anyway? I get editing out nudity so that everyone in the cabin isn't seeing tits flashed before them, but since one can only hear dialog with (presumably puchased) headphones, why clean up the language for everyone?

ghlbtsk 08-09-06 05:36 PM

Just so I'm clear: You want someone to make it easier for you to watch R-rated films with your young children?

Sorry, CleanFlicks was slapped down in court, so this is unlikely.

How do you feel about explicit language inserted into, say a Barbie video or Dora the Explorer? That's not what the creators intended and the same can be said about what you're asking for.

lawdood 08-09-06 05:49 PM

Show your children only age appropriate movies and your problem will be solved. Artistic integrity really shouldn't be tampered with. I bet your kids hear worse language out on the playground on a daily basis anyway.

Scarface would be awesome.

"Dang Gaspar Gomez, and dang the dangin' Diaz brothers! Dang'em all! I bury those cock-a-roaches!"

I'll see whoever I wanna see, and if I wanna dang'im, Tony, then I'll dang'im!"

"Can't you stop saying 'dang' all the time?"

sxwxs 08-09-06 06:09 PM

when i was a kid my grandfather had a vcr that would record over audio, he always cut out the cuss words in movies then let me watch them. i respect that he did that but my opinion on this topic is agreed w/ those talking about artistic integrity, and thats why i dont buy edited cds from walmart.

Alan Smithee 08-09-06 06:17 PM

Why the fuck would you want the goddamned curse words ommitted?? That's some fucked-up shit right there!

starman9000 08-09-06 06:40 PM

Seems like a pretty reasonable request. It would just be an option. I'd love to be able to watch Shaun of the Dead with the Prink option.

fender69 08-09-06 06:52 PM

Audio tracks can take up a good bit of space on a DVD. That's space I would rather have for a better looking picture.

Just hold a buzzer next to the kids head and press it every time there is a dirty word.

Mr. Cinema 08-09-06 07:36 PM

South Park: Bigger, Loner, & Uncut would be fun to try and edit.

South Park: Smaller, Shorter, and Cut

Mopower 08-09-06 08:12 PM

Just watch the movies on TBS, USA, etc.

darkside 08-09-06 08:23 PM

I honestly don't understand people's fear of words. Hearing the F word is not going to hurt your kids and most R and PG-13 movies are not something little kids could enjoy no matter how its edited.

You simply can not avoid the fact kids learn these words and its better to focus on teaching them when to use appropriate language instead of trying to pretend people in Scarface and Pulp Fiction don't use them. Nothing will stop them from cursing at some point in their lives and honestly there is nothing wrong with using a curse word if the context isn't insulting to some one.

Believe me, kids learning curse words from parents yelling at them and each other is the problem. Hearing it in a movie or in a song is not the major issue people believe it is.

emhello 08-09-06 08:27 PM

Don't f*** with my movies!!

marty888 08-09-06 08:29 PM

Maybe next you could go to their school and bleep all their classmates, too.

manicsounds 08-09-06 09:20 PM

It has been done a very few times.

Hopscotch: Criterion Collection has both the uncut dialogue or censored TV dialogue, Family Guy Volume 3 and Family Guy Movie both have the censored or uncensored dialogue.

I agree with you 100%.

I doubt studios are ever going to release discs with this option. However, rather than crap all over your post, you can get a player that filters out the language and other variables of your choice at www.clearplay.com. It's not really my thing, but you might want to give it a try if that's the kinda thing you're looking for. Looks like they have a video example too and the technology looks pretty capable.

And Half-Baked will be more hillarious:

Scarface:

"Dang you, dang you, & dang you, you're cool, i'm out"
