Luckily, I've already got most of those films, and the fact that they're just in sleeves further dissuades me from picking this up.

Oh yeah, and the fact that it's $850! Well, $650 if you pre-order.

Cameron 08-31-06 05:04 AM

thats pretty nice...but agreed that i already own several titles...

Richard Malloy 08-31-06 09:12 AM

Also, some new titles, including:

FIRES ON THE PLAIN (1959), Kon Ichikawa (THIS IS THE BIG ONE FOR ME!!!)

LE JOUR SE LÈVE (1939), Marcel Carné

MISS JULIE (1951), Alf Sjöberg

THREE DOCUMENTARIES: THE GREAT CHASE (1962), THE LOVE GODDESSES (1965), and PAUL ROBESON: TRIBUTE TO AN ARTIST (1979), Saul J. Turell

Damfino 08-31-06 01:24 PM

The $650 is only $13 per movie which constitutes a bargain by Criterion standards. The only problem is that I already have 24 of these movies (with 2 more on pre-order) so I can't justify it, but I would buy the book if they sell it separately.

this should get its own thread...

Whoa. Missed that one when I read the listing this morning. PLEASE don't let this be exclusive to the set! Unlikely, but one never knows... I'd assume the three new titles are for December?

Also, I see there are two OOP Hitchcock titles in the box and the OOP-for-the-moment M. Hulot's Holiday. Interesting...

Where did you see that M. Hulot's Holiday was OOP? It doesn't say anything about it on Criterion's website.

Cosmic Bus 08-31-06 06:32 PM

I thought the Tati discs were OOP (aside from Playtime)? Perhaps I'm mistaken.

Will this be sold at regular stores too. Wouldn't the discount be larger at a amazon or another etailer if it was?

MBoyd 08-31-06 07:48 PM

650 is pretty reasonable, but then again I have most of the films already. I'd rather just have the book. Sounds like thats the consensus here. Hardcore fans are the ones who would buy this and hardcore fans probably have most of the titles.

that monster is sweet.

The Lady Vanishes and The 39 Steps aren't OOP.

M. Hulot's Holiday and Mon Oncle returned to print in January 2004.

I doubt this boxset is going to sell that well. Obviously this thing will only appeal to the same people that buy Criterion discs now. As many have mentioned they already have many of these titles.

And don't tell me that it's only x per title. $650 is still $650.

I think they should have just issued the book and called it a day.

slop101 09-01-06 12:50 AM

I have about half the movies in the set also, and so the ones I don't have don't appeal to me too much, since I probably would've bought them by now if they had.

I would love to have that book though.

NobleRabbit 09-01-06 02:43 AM

What about the bonus discs that would otherwise accompany the films?

Would Seven Samurai, for instance, just have the feature disc and no second and third discs?

No bonus discs included. However, Seven Samurai gets two discs because the film is split across them, to maintain maximum quality for such a long film.
