1/only Dungeons and Dragons Cartoon thread - 5 Dec

I know that the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon from the 80s is on DVD in the UK. But has there been any word of a US release?

Chew 11-03-05 02:07 PM

I couldn't find any news stories on this at http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/

If it's not there, it likely hasn't even been hinted as a possible release.

I used to watch this cartoon every Saturday morning. I'd love to revisit it if they release it on DVD someday.

Well i got my hands on this last year when i was back in the UK. If anyone gets a chance i would highly recommend picking up the Region 2 box set. The DVds are all really nicely presented and it doesn't seem to have aged a day. Plus the full box to house the DVDs is really nicely put together.

I was initially going to hold out for the Region 1, but who knows when that is going to get released.

Its weird thinking about it. When i lived in the UK i used to buy a lot of Region 1 imports because they were released a lot earlier and in many cases were better produced. But these days it appears to be swinging back the other way quite a bit. There are a lot of DVDs that still have not been released in the US that are widely available in the UK. I am just looking forward to getting back to the UK at X-mas and picking up some more DVDs.

I don't understand why the studios drag their heels on things like this. All they do is shove more traffic to the bootleggers. If you're not going to put out the things people want, they'll go to other places to get it.

If you're a fan, this is definitely a great reason to pick up a cheap region-free player around the holidays. Amazon has one at around $28 right now, and I'm sure there will be others in the next month or two.

As james2025a says, the Region 2 UK set is really nicely presented in a cool box. And the cartoons are just as fun as they were back in the day.

From what I heard, they didn't actually finish the series, shame, it was a good show.

bboisvert 11-04-05 01:49 PM

Michael Reaves wrote a final episode ("Requiem") that was unfortunately never filmed. The script used to be online... I'm sure some sites must still have it available.

Towards the bottom of the page, requires Adobe Acrobat to read. Best way to find it is to put "requiem" into your browser's "find" field.

Which player are you referring to? Are there any good DVD+RW players that are also region-free? Right now, I just have a old region 1 player. I'm interested in both a region-free player (with PAL to NTSC conversion) and a DVD+RW recorder. It would be nice to kill two birds with one stone.

This is the one I was talking about:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...onics&v=glance

The price seems to go up and down occasionally, but it is $28 now (after rebate, not including shipping). It has good PAL->NTSC conversion and is region free right out of the box (with about 30 seconds of clicks with the remote).

Chew 11-07-05 12:30 PM

Or if you want a Divx playing/DTS/Progressive/Region-free/NTSC-PAL player for $30 more: the Philips DVP642

Holy Shite, TvShowsOnDvd are reporting that extras are being recorded for the North American release of Dungeons & Dragons. You can read about it HERE

I have the R2 boxset, which is kick arse by the way, but I would gladly double dip on this if it does indeed come out. My second favorite cartoon show of all time. Great news.

JasonF 03-22-06 05:57 PM

Mark Evanier (one of the show's creators) mentioned this in passing on is blog recently:

Sweet, I can't wait! It's cool to see they are doing commentaries, that will help me justify what will essentially be a nostalgia purchase.

FantasticVSDoom 03-24-06 10:35 AM

Wow, this is great news...This one definitely has me excited.

darmok 03-24-06 11:05 AM

thank you for that link for the script for that unfinished finale episode. would've been a great ending!!

grim_tales 03-24-06 12:08 PM

The kids never got home did they? :(

BuddyRevell 07-07-06 12:31 PM

BCI will be releasing Dungeons & Dragons!!

Read the story here.

This is awesome! I already have the R2 release and I will be buying this release as well. This is my second favorite cartoon just behind Spiderman and his Amazing Friends. Woo hoo!!

Thanks to tvshowsondvd

bboisvert 07-07-06 01:07 PM

I love the R2 set and packaging (just rewatched this within the past couple of months, actually)... but assuming they put some decent extras on the R1 set, I'm all over this.

basaro 07-07-06 01:12 PM

cool, hope this pans out soon. Must have.

Dmacsg1 07-07-06 02:08 PM

Awesome news!! I have been catching them on ToonDisney and have been having a blast watching them again!

From the looks of this ad, Dungeons & Dragons will hit in November. I'm assuming they will officially announce it during Comic Con

Dungeons and Dragons (Cartoon) - November 7th Release Date Announced

Over at IGN the following was just posted:

http://dvd.ign.com/articles/719/719584p1.html

On November 7, 2006, BCI Eclipse will release a complete collection of episodes from the 1983 animated series Dungeons & Dragons. The four-disc set will collect all 27 episodes of the '83 cartoon, and feature a host of bonus materials. The set will be available for the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of $49.98.

According to the recent press release issued by BCI Eclipse, this DVD set will serve to expand the company's cache of fan-favorite animated titles. "As we continue to build our catalog of classic animated series from the '70s and '80s, the industry is taking note of the success of these titles," said Hayne. "We're fortunate to have this unique opportunity to market 'Dungeons & Dragons' to the same audience that has been enjoying our most recent animated programming."

"Dungeons & Dragons" tells the tale of six kids who, after riding the Dungeons & Dragons rollercoaster, mysteriously get sucked into its fantasy world. Once there, the kids are met with a variety of monsters and entities, but to their delight, they are also greeted by the mysterious Dungeon Master, who gives each of them a magical item to use to defend themselves against the evil beings.

Its about time they released this on Region 1. I have had the region 2 box set for almost 2 years now. BCI has been doing an amazing job with its releases. I may even double dip for this if the extras are any good.

Muad'Dib 07-19-06 07:11 AM

Wow! Excellent news. It's about time they released this in region 1. This has been on my want list for a long time now. I will definately be picking this one up.
