Of course everyone's dvd collection is sorted differently.

Here is how I sort mine:

I have a dvd shelf just for Disney/Kid movies.

I have two shelves for regular dvd movies.

I have a final very large dvd shelf for TV boxsets, Criterion, Superbit, and special editions boxsets that cannot fit, or do not look right with the rest of my movies.

You cannot go wrong, just as long as you know where they are when you want to watch a specific movie.

My friends think that I am wierd because I have my 500 dvds in Alphabetical order.

:nonono:

Actually, you're only weird if you insist on keeping your friends in alphabetical order.

For my collection (somewhere above 600), it would be, because there are plenty of movies I have where I like the movie but don't care much about the director. I'm not likely to buy too many Michael Curtiz movies, but I do have 'Casablanca'...
That's weird, because Michael Curtiz has one of the larger sections in my collection -- Captain Blood, Angels with Dirty Faces, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Dodge City, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, The Sea Hawk, Casablanca, Mildred Pierce, and Night and Day (Mystery of the Wax Museum is under De Toth since it's an extra on House of Wax). At some point I need to pick up Yankee Doodle Dandy.

I think how someone organizes their collection depends on personal preference and their own definitions of what things are....meaning that I consider box sets as a set having at least 2 different movies boxed together. So sets like F13 and Nightmare are in, but Clerks X, Sin City and sets like that are with the other movies. Sets like Showgirls and Scarface have to be in a different area just because of there size.

How about collections like Film Noir, Controversial Classics, etc.? Do you guys break them up or keep them together?

Who considers Sin City, Clerks X, or similar a box set or anything else but an individual title?

If it came in a sturdy box/packaging, I always keep them together. If it is a flimsy POS, I put that flimsy thing (i.e. Hallmark Classic DVD Collection I & II) in a drawer or box out of the way.
