I saw this last night as well in our Electronics Department. Someone had unpacked it right next to the registers. I told the guy there it shouldn't be out 'til today and he should be careful of guests seeing it and wanting to buy.

Looked nice, but a little too expensive for my taste.

I did the DVD Planet GCO on the Gift Set. I would kick myself later if I didn't. Saved about $14.00 after shipping. Not bad. Then I'll save another $10 with the rebate. Making it a $38 purchase after shipping.

I'm thinking of doing the DVD Planet deal with GCO to get it for $10.00 after MIR. Is DVD Planet a good place to do business with...I've never dealth with them before.

Is the MIR $10 for both the Gift set and the stand alone EE? I know with the LOTR films it was $10 for the Gift and $5 for the EE

edit: saw it in the store today. The $10 rebate is good for both Gift and stand alone editions.

How fast is DVDPlanet's standard shipping ($2.90)? I'm thinking maybe it is worth it to get UPS 2 day for $5.

What type of packaging does DVDPlanet use to ship? Is it the same for standard shipping and UPS 2 day?

I think I made out like a bandit on my purchase of the the 4-Disc Set.

It was on sale at F.Y.E. for $39.99, which with my Backstage Pass account I got for $35.99. And then F.Y.E. has a $10.00 rebate for the set. And there's also a $10.00 rebate inside the package for if you bought the last release. So all total.. $15.99 plus tax.

just got this from DVD planet:

IMPORTANT DELIVERY INFORMATION - Your order will ship within 1-2
business days.

If you chose Economy Shipping, your order will be shipped
via Standard/Media Mail. Normal delivery time for this method is 4-14
business days which translates roughly to 1-3 weeks. Most of our deliveries
arrive in 1 week to 10 days, but some orders do take up to three weeks.

If you chose Standard Shipping, your order will take 2-4 days for delivery after
the item is shipped.

and here's a review from IGN:

http://dvd.ign.com/articles/750/750698p1.html

Disappointing about the battle sequence effects.

Here is another review that confirms above post.

Looks like I am skipping this double dip. Just wait for the HD version.

i got my ee today. the packaging is nice, but as someone else said, the cardboard is really flimsy. the lotr packaging was much better. but i'm still looking forward to seeing the film and the extras. i haven't seen it since it was still in the theaters.

Damn you and your logic buzzkill. Ah well, at least this was instant satisfaction.

Plus it was free considering I traded in about $70.00 with of used DVDs yesterday.

Enough said...I'll not be buying this. Kind of ticks me off that I originally got the bare bones vs the collectors edition because I thought this would actually be an EE instead of a rip off.

What you get here does not consist of any fully new scenes or sequences that were cut from the theatrical version of the film, but rather just brief moments added back to pre-existing scenes, 30 seconds here, 28 seconds there, 3 second over on that side. Certainly these bits can add texture to a scene or the overarching story of the film, and at times they do, but many of them are items that have been added back in to the climactic battle scene of the film and, unfortunately, the visual effects in the new footage tend to be a bit underdeveloped. The result is jarring - though at least it makes it easier to spot what's new and what isn't.

And ultimately, only the most devout Narnia fan will be able to find this new footage, so slight it all really is (the various moments add up to about seven minutes). Plus, Disney's vagueness about the extended footage is practically an admission of guilt in and of itself that this is yet another film that really didn't need an extended edition, and one that didn't even have the material on the cutting room floor that would have merited such a version anyway.

If you care about extras, the massive nearly 2 hour documentary about C.S. Lewis' life and the nearly 2 and a half hour making of documentary that plays alongside the film on Disc 4 are well worth the double dip.

I glanced at the box in the store yesterday and they weren't very detailed. Definitely not on the caliber of the LOTR pack ins. They don't look like they warrant it.

Thanks JarJarBinks. That makes me feel better. Now as far as the bookends. I saw them in the store and they were definately more hefty looking that I expected. Probably not $30 hefty looking but oh, well.

Not to sound contradictory or anything, but the C.S. Lewis documentary only runs about 70 minutes long, quite a bit shy of 2 hours.

It's not the greatest thing ever. Sort of interesting, I guess. But, keep in mind, I never read the books, so I don't think they gave enough information for some of the comparisons and parallels with his life and the books to make sense to me.

Haven't watched the movie or the 4th disc yet.

Really? I couldn't see the counter on my DVD but it seemed longer than that.

My take on the new cut is that it's a definite improvement, but hardly necessary. I think the film now seems more British than American in its pacing, with a bit more room for reflection & scenery between events. I like that. I don't think the new flying monsters at the end add much to the battle, and I agree that their CGI isn't impressively realistic.

I received this today from buy.com. The outer box was crushed thanks to buy.com's pathetic packaging. Also, my copy did not include the booklet. So far, so bad on this double dip.

Pretty much my thoughts also.

If I have some extra money laying around after Christmas, I might pick up the EE and give the 2-disc to someone.

Actually, you should have bought it at fye.con. They had it on sale for $29.99 with the 10% off and free shipping coupon bringing it down to $27.99. It also came with the $10 FYE rebate and the $10 upgrade rebate bringing it to $7.99 after rebates with free shipping.
