How do you organize your TV-on-DVD collection?
How do you organize your TV-on-DVD collection: alphabetical, network, airyear, length, distributor, order you purchased/place them, or some other way?
I currently (and have had for some years) my collection organized alphabetically, but I was thinking about how it would kidna fun to reorganize them by network and then alphabetically... Just curious how others do it... |

I currently (and have had for some years) my collection organized alphabetically, but I was thinking about how it would kidna fun to reorganize them by network and then alphabetically... Just curious how others do it... But I generally have comedy together, Seinfeld, Curb your Enthusiasm, Ali G. Reality shows together as well, Joe Schmo, Anna Nicole Cartoons all together, South Park, Simpsons, Sealab, Family Guy I can't do the alphabetical, would take too long and it would piss me off having to reorganize everything when I buy new DVDs. |
Mine are alphabetical on a separate shelving unit. I keep Buffy, Angel, and Firefly together with my Buffy stuff. Friends also is off by itself since I needed some extra room on the regular TV shelf and they look nice sitting together alone.
Mine are mixed in with the features and everything's in alpha order.
Alph, separate from my movies.
I do my entire collection alphabetical by genre. The three TV categories are:
TV Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Drama TV Comedy I fit everything in there -- although it does lead to a few awkward filings. A-Team as a 'drama' etc. |
Everything's alphabetical and mixed in with my movies. This isn't my idea, but my wife is resistant to changing it.
Alphabetical, separate from my movies. Right now, comedy and drama are pretty much separated, but that's out of necessity not preference.
I don't understand why anyone wouldn't organize their discs in alphabetical order. Isn't that easiest? |
haphazzardly... Some are in the 400-DVD player, others are in the "waiting to be watched pile", some are in binders (usually done when I have the complete series of something, and finally some are just sitting in their cases on a shelf separate from my main collection (in no real order).
Favorites first - ANGEL, DS9, Firefly, CSI then standard alphabetical.
It's easy when you only have a handful of TV DVDs like I do. |
i keep all tv shows together
seasons of the same show are kept together the generic boxes are kept in alphabetical order (undeclared, malcolm in the middle, etc.) boxes that come in awkward heights and such are lined up with similar boxes. for instance i have my doogie howsers next to wonderfalls. |
for now, i keep them mixed up with my other dvds----when i get a new cabinet, they'll probably be organized by genre
Alphabetical
I organize them alphabetically and apart from my movies.
Mine are all over the damn place. I have 4 different racks and tv sets on all of them. Space is coming more and more difficult to come by as the dvds keeep rolling in. Now where do I put that damn monkey head when it arrives?
Alphabetically and separated from films and the like. Even with a ton of TV-on-DVD, I see no need to break them down into genres.
Separate from my regular movies, then alphabetical. I have regular DVDs, then TV, then box sets for films, then Criterion, then Criterion boxsets.
Movies are alphabetical - TV shows I keep separate, alphabetized by genre:
Sitcoms Britcoms Drama Animated SNL, etc. (Sketch comedy) Sci-Fi/Fantasy |

I have a mix of a lot of those things: Apart from movies (exception: All Star Trek items are together). Favorites on my front shelves (For display, mostly Sci-Fi) After that, it is mostly by network. Most of my Fox, HBO, and Cartoon Network stuff is together. After that, it's kind of a crapshoot on where like items will fit on the shelves. I try to do genre with the rest. I have a bunch of single "random" TV on DVD items that I just put all together (like Stand-up DVD's, Conan O'Brien, etc...) FWIW, I sort my movies alphabetically by genre. http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread....&page=22&pp=25 Second Post, a couple pics show close up of the front shelf with all of the "favorites" (I don't have enough room for all of the favorites there). |
TV --- Animated
TV --- CG/Computer Aminated TV --- Comedy TV --- Costume/Puppet (these would be things like Muppets or Gerry Anderson shows) TV --- Drama TV --- Fantasy/Medieval TV --- Fantasy/Supernatural TV --- Police/Crime TV --- Science Fiction TV --- Sitcoms TV --- Superhero |
I have so many that they now have their own bookcase. I sort them alpha, but they are separate from the movie DVDs.
Alphanumeric, mixed in with the movies.
I keep each series together, and then arrange them chronologically, by airdate of the first episode of the series. The Mary Tyler Moore Show is first, then All in the Family, etc. The only deviation is that Angel immediately follows Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I keep that alphabetical. I used to have them mixed in with the movies, but I realized that there were times when we wanted to just watch an episode or two of a TV show, so it would make sense to put them separate from the movies (music was already in its own thing). Seasons are, obviously, in season order, but volume type releases (ie 90's Spider-man cartoon) are kept in release order.
