REDS (October 3rd)
courtesy of DVDACTIVE:
Paramount Home Entertainment has sent over some early artwork for a 25th Anniversary Edition of Reds which stars Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. This new two-disc special edition will be available to own from the 3rd October this year. I'm afraid Paramount has yet to reveal the disc specs for this one, but we'll bring you the full details very shortly. Stay tuned. For now though, here's a look at the package artwork. As you can see from the bright red sticker - the artwork has yet to be finalised. (please feel free to post the artwork) http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/reds.html Ciao, Pro-B |
 FINALLY! This DVD is long overdue. Now if Paramount release Looking For Mr.Goodbar in the near future, I will be satisfied.

Excellent news. There was an article on Reds in Vanity Fair a while ago, which made me think that something was possibly in the works. Interesting history behind this one, which should make for some fascinating extras.

Lets not forget 1492
|
Many would agree that this movie was more deserving of the Oscar back in 1981 instead of Chariots of Fire. It is certainly a long overdue title that I welcome.

I will always remember my theatrical viewing of this movie because at the end (after the final scene ended but BEFORE the credits rolled), an employee in the back of the auditorium began shouting (through a BULLHORN, no less), "PLEASE CLEAR THE THEATRE NOW. PLEASE CLEAR THE THEATRE NOW." Made me want to run to the box office and demand my money back. I enjoyed the movie and preferred to stay for the full credit roll. Oh...and there was an intermission too. Nowadays they expect you to sit through a 200-minute movie in one session. |
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This has been a good year!
|
Cool, I'd like to see this one again.
|
Details on the extras have been posted.
|
Was hoping for a commentary track, but those docs look solid.
|
Noticed tonight that this had moved from the "saved" (essentially unavailable) section of my Netflix queue into the available section, albeit listing as a very long wait. Is there an explanation as to how they've supposedly gotten access to this? I haven't heard of a R0 copy out there (as Netflix will sometimes carry those) and it's far too early for the R1 copy to have snuck out.
|
I assume it is a glitch in the matrix.
Ciao, Pro-B |
High def version is coming too.

Sweet Tapdancing Christ, it's about time. What a truly superb film.
|
Cool! This is one of those movies I always meant to see but haven't yet seen. Looks like I'll get my chance in a few months.

I realise the artwork isn't final but I'd like to see the word Reds in red. |
Thank you for linking the image-cover. I really, really like it!
Thanks again! Pro-B |
No problem :)
I've cleaned up the old one here a bit (bitmap, 4.2mb). I never realised until cleaning that that the red bit at the bottom is a picture of <s>revolutionists</s> terrorists. |

One of my all time favorite epics. I also saw it in the theater and remember the intermission. Very disappointed there is not a commentary. I consider this a masterpiece and can't believe Beatty wouldn't do one. Also was hoping for something about the cinematography by Vittorio Storaro which is amazing. Here's hoping the doc is excellent. Regardless, I'm getting this.

I blind buyed this, and I can confirm that the slipcover is the same but the inside artwork is different than pictured above but uses the same image it's just shinier and covers more space. This is a 25th anniversary DVD and there is no disc art for this release from Paramount it just has a cheap frosty grey finish on both DVD's with the logo and all the usual DVD info. The release date has also been bumped to 10/17/2006 but some copys have been released early because they were shipped in boxes for 10/10/2006. Very nice DVD that could have used some DISC ART!

This film gave Warren Beatty his sole Academy Award - for Best Director of 1981.
*Best Supporting Actress - Maureen Stapleton Other nominations include: *Best Picture of 1981 *Best Actor - Warren Beatty *Best Actress - Diane Keaton *Best Supporting Actor - Jack Nicholson |

P.S. - The brief delay to Oct 17 for the DVD release was to accomodate the current theatrical engagement (only here in NYC?). |

Here is our review...
http://www.upcomingdiscs.com/dvd_rev...pe=date_posted "Whether I like it or not, Reds remains a vital and favorite film by many people. The interviews provide a good supplement to the feature, and the picture looks fairly solid. All in all, at a cheap price, it’s a touchstone for any Democrat, and is worth picking up if you’re one of them." |

I've never seen Reds, but I remember when it came out. It was, IIRC, competing with Raiders of the Lost Ark for the Best Picture and I was naturally hoping that Raiders would take home the little gold naked guy.
Reds seems like it's in kind of a weird place. I remember a lot of hype when it came out and a lot of Oscar nominations, but it really seemed to disappear after that. I don't remember ever seeing it on cable or in a video store in the past twenty or so years, and even now, it seems like it took almost ten years to be released to DVD. Is there a reason for this? I realize that the subject matter could be pretty controversial, especially in the 80s at the height of Reagan and the Cold War, but I don't remember any kind of backlash against it either. Is this just considered to be uncommercial and overlong (perhaps like Branaugh's Hamlet) and was thus forgotten? |

I don't really understand your snippet--from my remembrance (which is admittedly pretty old, last saw this 20 years ago) this movie has nothing to do with Democrats, unless you think we're all Socialists. |
Anybody that thinks Reds is pro-communist obviously hasn't seen the entire move or wasn't paying attention at the end. John Reed was a tragic figure who sacrificed his journalistic intregity for the Socialist cause and ultimately suffered for it (even if he may not have regretted it).
Regardless of your political persuasion, this movie provides most of the background you need to understand why Communism was doomed to fail. |
