Best DVDs for Testing Out New Powered Subwoofer
 

I have a new set of 5.1 home theater speakers being shipped to me from Crutchfield, including my first powered subwoofer (I've been suffering with a passive one up until now) so would anyone be willing to browse my DVD collection (linked below) and advise the best titles and scenes for giving my new sub a workout? I'm most interested in scenes with rich low end, but without being coupled with a lot of high end, too--in other words, an explosion may have great bass, but it also has the high end "crack" of the blast, as well as the debris; which discs have scenes with just cool, clean low end playing (maybe the Nostromo flyover at the beginning of ALIEN?)? Thanks in advance, and sorry if this has been asked 1,000 times (search yielded nothing) and sorry if this is the wrong forum (it's certainly open to interpretation).

War of the Worlds has some pretty nice low-end particularly when the tripod starts to rise up, there's this moment where the the ground begins to rumble a bit and the people think at first that's it's a subway.

Speaking of Spielberg, there's also that famous moment in Jurassic Park with the T-Rex and the cup of water. Another one is in Saving Private Ryan when the German Tanks are approaching, there's a nice eerie rumble to it that gets a little more intense as the tanks close in.

Every time i have ever changed speakers, the first thing i do is pop in Jurassic Park and skip straight the the T-Rex scene.

War of the Worlds for a full movie testing. If you are wanting a quick, powerful testing, skip to the plane crash on Cast Away. That one really surprised me.

Attack of the Clones has some good subwoofer moments. The final battle really takes advantage of them.

Lord of the Rings has the SPECTACULAR low-range test when Sauron's "death shockwave" passes through/over the human/elf army.. I always loved that part.

ShagMan, me too. :) I always get a "Turn that down NOW" look from my SO because I have the audio turned up to 11 just for that moment.

Flight of the Phoenix - opening song and crash are great...

The new DVD of <i>Event Horizon</i> has some pretty strong LFE. In a supreme moment of non-manliness, I actually had to turn the subwoofer <u>down</u> a few times---it was almost overpowering the dialogue. :(

I would use Peter Jackon's Kong as well.

I'll put in a suggestion for X-Men: the scene where Magneto captures Wolverine and Rogue in the train. When he uses his magnetism there's an incredible bass sound in the background.

The asteroid chase with the seismic charges is quite nice.

It isn't but, even if it was, it wouldn't matter--though my Kenwood receiver is DTS-capable, my Sony DVP-S7000 DVD player doesn't feature DTS playback.

That seems an obvious choice--I can't believe I hadn't thought of it yet!

Minority Report - car factory sequence
Toy Story 2 - opening sequence
Titanic - pretty much the 2nd half of the movie
Munich - I know this may sound like odd choice, but the phone bomb sequence has some jarringly intense LFE
Spider-Man 2 - the scene where Doc Ock introduces his energy machine
Batman Begins - Lots of good LFE, but one scene that comes to mind is when Bruce Wayne test drives "The Tumbler"

Yes, Munich is a great choice. The bass sounds just come out of nowhere, when you're not expecting it. It sounded superb in the theater too.

In my opinion, the best DTS soundtrack I have ever heard is War of the Worlds SE.

Agreed, U-571 would be my choice.

Yep. Saving Private Ryan and Master and Commander used to be my favorite DTS discs, but War of the Worlds has moved up to my top demo for sound.

Mostly, anything where Hans Zimmer has done the score. :rock2:
