A restored 1.0 mono mix will also be included.

eta: am I the only one who was hoping for a mch mix on Playtime? I remember Terry Jones' description of the horizontal and vertical panning of sound effects at the 70mm premiere, and I was thinking: "I'd move my speakers around to a stupid configuration if I had a reason to." With the way Tati uses sound to draw the eye to details on screen, I wish it had been included as an extra. Also, if this is a new transfer for Brazil, I wonder if anyone's told Gilliam that the "by God, it works" line that he references in the commentary is missing from the cut they assembled, and if so, does he care enough to get it re-inserted for this DVD release? |
Another release of Brazil, another release I won't buy.
Maybe someday Universal will put out the release I want... |
Fine, I'll bite - What would that consist of?
|
so what exactly is wrong with a movie properly presented in 1:33:1 windowboxed? - people on this board continually bitch and complain when studios alter films from their original OAR's and here Criterion takes the effort to preserve the full screen by adding a sliver of a black box around the image - and people complain about this as well - ??

There is exactly one thing from the original U.S. theaterical cut that I wish Gilliam had retained... Sam's line upon viewing his mother's plastic-wrap cosmetic enhancement, "My god, it works!"
Other than that, pffft. |

Another, why? Several of my friends have seen the US version and the version on DVD and hate the new version. They feel the same way about the US version that I do and think the new version wrecks the film. With reviews like that, from people that I know and have similar tastes as I do, I'll stick to my memories. After the sound Gold Rush, Apocalypse Now Redux and Star Wars Special Editions director's preference pretty much has soured on me. They can revise their films as much as they want but I want to have the choice to watch the version that I like. One of the DVD review sites said the Criterion Brazil set was definitive. I disagree; it is not even close. A definitive set would have anamorphic versions of the US release, International release, revised (and currently the only available version) “Director's Cut”, as well as Love Conquers All. I would buy that version, and watch every single cut of the film. DVD extra junkie that I am, at this point I would buy a good quality anamorphic transfer with no extras of the theatrical cut of Brazil. ... but then I would turn around and buy the new Criterion box set to have the most complete version of extras (that includes the "DC cut") of a movie that I love that I could get. Until the US theatrical Brazil is released (anamorphic -- and bring on the International version as well if Universal or Criterion wants to) I'm not buying anything. |
I too would rather have the US theatrical-cut (which I had on VHS and watched countless times throughout the '80s). But I'm not gonna split hairs - at least it's not full-frame like my old VHS was...

If the US theatrical version of Brazil ever comes out I will be the first person in line for it. In the meantime I'm looking forward to the 2007 Blade Runner release. :) |

I'm also not a fan of revised versions of films. Particularly in the case when the director had "final cut" approval to begin with. Make the film you want to make and then move on is my preference for things. I do admit that this is not something that I see as a hard and fast rule, merely a preference. eta: am I the only one who was hoping for a mch mix on Playtime? Point being that Tati supposedly had several discrete channels that he recorded to and we end up with 2.0. What the heck happened? |
Beaver's got their SS review/comparison up - looks good... really good!

DVDBeaver has comparison review for Playtime up on their website.
Playtime http://www.criterion.dvdbeaver.com/f...4/playtime.htm They have not completed a comparison review for Brazil just yet. |
I'm curious to see how long Criterion continues the 'C' logo-themed disc artwork. It's on several (if not all) of their post-redesign releases that I'm aware of. I'd rather an image or design that's related to the film, myself.
|
I saw this on the Criterion homepage:
The first shipment of Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales included a slipcase that was sized incorrectly. The problem has been fixed—please contact us at [email protected] to receive your properly sized replacement slipcase. A portion of our first shipment of our remastered three-disc Brazil box set did not include the booklet for disc one. If you're missing your Brazil booklet, please contact us at [email protected], and we will immediately send it to you at no additional cost. |
Anyone get Jigoku? I'm thinking about blind buying for $20.
|
I emailed them to request a replacement for the Rohmer box. They did not confirm the request or send any kind of response, but the replacement box arrived three days after I sent the email. I was glad to see that they seemed aware of all of the complaints about the Rohmer box and were quick to redress the matter.

There was no charge for the Rohmer box. It appears it actually cost them $1.83 to send it to me. It was shipped in a large austere cardboard envelope with the new Criterion logo on it. I merely had to fold a couple of flaps to assemble it.
|
What's the difference in the Rohmer box? My slipcase is a tiny bit loose compared to
the invividual digipacks, is that what they're talking about? |
