Will heat from a player affect DVD's?
I am wondering if I leave a DVD (in its case) on top of a DVD player for awhile, while another plays if the slight heat given off by the player will do any long term damage. I like to keep them there to see what i have playing or what's next.

I have A friend who keeps all of his DVDS in a 300 disc changer. I warned him about the heat, possibly hurting his collection. According to him he's had only 2-discs stop playing and he is in denial about the heat having any affect. I personally don't leave movies in my 5-disc changer for very long.

On commercial discs I doubt there is much risk. DVD-Rs could be affected by heat though.

well, if it's a little dissipating heat, no problem. but if your player gets really hot, the DVD might get warped over time. i don't leave any DVDs/Games on top of my players or consoles, not worth potentially damaging them.

If you can boil DVDs, they certainly will stand up to the minimal heat generated by a DVD player. |
I personally wouldn't leave anything on top of a player for very long. I have a five disc DVD changer that I'll leave certain DVD's inside of all the time... it was constructed to house the DVD's so...
...but on top of the DVD player is where all the heat is being dispelled (if yours has vents on the top). Even if it isn't, the case itself will get warm since well, usually it's some kind of metal. The DVD's themselves sit on plastic trays inside so I don't see the harm. But again, on top of the players is where you'll really feel the heat. I have no proof like the above said case that this will harm a DVD but you know the saying... better to be safe, than sorry. I would say, don't worry about the heat inside the player. |
I too am quite concerned when leaving DVD's on top of my receiver which is stacked on top of my DVD player, have done this before and lifted to find the plastic on the DVD case to be quite pliable, this cant be good for the plastic disc which is right beneath that.

Receivers give off a lot more heat than DVD players do, so yeah, it would be a bad idea to leave DVDs on top of a receiver.

Somewhat off topic. I remember back in the 1960s tvs got so hot that if you left a box of crayons on top of one they would melt to liquid and run down the sides of the tv. Man did I get yelled at.
