Thanks Dablueguy. It appears that 5 ELEMENT NINJAS has gone OOP. I don't remember coming across this title on Mcarver's OOP lists of the last year or so. Amazon doesn't carry it anymore as well as DeepDiscount. I just bought one over at Borders.com with a coupon code. I guess they have a few left. Got it for $15 and change shipped. Has THE FLAG OF IRON gone OOP as well?

Can someone post a list of all the TOKYO SHOCK/MEDIA BLASTERS releases? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

Question about THE KILLER.
I re-watched my Fox Lorber DVD and the subtitles referred to Chow Yun-Fat's character as "Jeffrey" and the names the two men give each other are "Dumbo" and "Mickey Mouse."

Now, I remember there was some discussion about different sets of subtitles for this film. Are these subtitles the "right" ones or the "wrong" ones? The favored ones or the unfavored ones?

Thanks.

Does anyone know if the TOKYO SHOCK/SHAW BROTHERS titles are going OOP? It appears that 5 ELEMENT NINJAS has indeed gone OOP. I can't find it anywhere. This dvd came out in January and it's already OOP? Whatever.

Amazon.ca still have the above two titles in stock.

Check out this link for this thread in which they list all of the Shaw Brothers North American releases by the different companies.

The subtitles for the DD, Fox Lorber and Criterion versions of Hard Boiled are dubtitles (subtitles that were taken from the English Dub). The Mei Ah release is the only one that uses proper subtitles based on the Cantonese dialogue.

I bought Crippled Avengers the other day, and noticed that the spine number is 44. Is Eight Diagram Pole Fighter supposed to be 43, even though it hasn't been released yet?

Okay, I found this on the web:

At their first face to face encounter, John and Li endow each other with insulting nicknames, subtitled as "Butt-Head" and "Numb-nuts," but closer in direct translation to "prawn's-head" and "big baby boy" (when The Killer was first released theatrically in the early '90s, these nicknames were subtitled as "Mickey Mouse" and "Dumbo.")
So, is there any DVD edition that has the "right" subtitles, i.e. "Butt-Head" and "Numb-nuts"???

Still waiting on my copy, but from what I read DD used Dubtitles for their Crippled Avengers DVD.

For everyone worrying about another last minute delay on "8 Diagram Pole Fighter," fear not. I have a copy for review in my hand. Initial glance shows this looks to be a solid disc on par with "36th Chamber of Shaolin." Barebones sadly, but I'm glad we have a good R1 edition. I should have a review up here in a few days.

per imdb
In the first version with English subtitles, nearly everything in the film, including dialogue, the song, and characters' names, was mistranslated. For example, Chow Yun Fat's character is named Ah Jong, not Jeff or John. Currently, the only accurate English-subtitled version is the UK DVD release by Hong Kong Legends.

Robin-B-Hood releases next Tuesday, not my favorite, but looking forward to it since they have a decent track record with recent movies on Blu-ray.

I might get Robin-B-Hood, I need a Jackie Chan fix, and on blu-ray none the less. If we could get Police Story 3 uncut blu-ray, I would die a happy man.

I've heard that the non-mono HKL release is the one that's best-reputed in terms its translation. I understand (and bear in mind that this is all hearsay, since the only things I can say in any form of Chinese are "thank you" and "hello") that the two nicknames were some sort of sexual jokes. I believe that Chow character is actually named "Ah-Jong." Again, don't quote me.

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

It looks like August 9th is a big day as dvdaf has four Shaw Brothers movies scheduled for release from DD, and they haven't had anything new since December '10.

They are:

Executioners From Shaolin
Five Shaolin Masters
Mad Monkey Kung Fu
Martial Arts of Shaolin

I can't wait!

Three of them in the top tier of Shaw Bros. kung fu films. MAD MONKEY KUNG FU--still good, but in the second tier.

Just pre-ordered them, I sold off about 80 Shaw Brothers titles a few months back and have been regretting it ever since, need to start rebuilding the library.
