Hello Friends!!

I noticed over at Amazon that they have a bunch of SHAW BROS. movies released by a company called Tokyo Shock. Are these legit releases or bootlegs (dvrs)? If they are legit, anyone know what the quality is like on these discs?

Tokyo Shock is part of Media Blasters. They're legit. Quality is as good as any other U.S. releases of Shaw Bros. titles I've seen.

Getting this thread back on track, it seems DD is not done with the Shaw Bros. movies:

Shaolin Mantis on 11/16/10

Seconded. Im still waiting for the death bump for this thread. But a dedicated thread would be nice.

With a few exceptions, their SD Shaw Brothers releases have been very good and if they are able to release all of the ones that they have rights to, I'm going to be very happy.

The titles below are the one that they have the rights to and haven't been released yet (it may take a long while though)...

* 7 Man Army (Chang Cheh)
* Behind the Yellow Line (Taylor Wong)
* Blood Brothers (Chang Cheh)
* Boxer from Shantung (Chang Cheh)
* Boxer Rebellion (Chang Cheh)
* Buddha's Palm (Taylor Wong)
* Clan of the White Lotus (Lo Lieh)
* Crippled Avengers (Chang Cheh) Coming 09/14/10
* Dirty Ho (Lau Kar-leung)
* Disciples Of The 36th Chamber (Lau Kar-leung)
* Executioners from Shaolin (Lau Kar-leung)
* Five Shaolin Masters (Chang Cheh)
* Flying Guillotine (Ho Meng-Hwa)
* Full Alert (Ringo Lam)
* Golden Swallow (Chang Cheh)
* Hero (Corey Yuen)
* Justice, My Foot! (Johnnie To)
* Killer Clans (Chor Yuen)
* Look Out, Officer! (Lau Sze Yu)
* Love in a Fallen City (Ann Hui)
* Mad Monkey Kung Fu (Lau Kar-leung)
* Man of Iron (Chang Cheh)
* Monkey Kung Fu (Lo Mar)
* New One-Armed Swordsman (Chang Cheh)
* Out of the Dark (Jeffrey Lau)
* Painted Faces (Alex Law)
* Shaolin Mantis (Lau Kar-leung) Forthcoming
* Shaolin Temple (Chang Cheh)
* Skinny Tiger, Fatty Dragon (Lau Kar Wing)
* Starry is the Night (Ann Hui)
* The Angry Guest (Chang Cheh)
* The Anonymous Heroes (Chang Cheh)
* The Avenging Eagle (Sun Chung)
* The Chinese Boxer (Jimmy Wang Yu)
* The Dragon From Russia (Clarence Fok Yiu-leung)
* The Flying Dagger (Chang Cheh)
* The Invincible Fist (Chang Cheh)
* The Kung-Fu Instructor (Sun Chung)
* The Mad Monk (Johnnie To)
* The Savage Five (Chang Cheh)
* The Shaolin Avengers (Chang Cheh)
* The Victim (Sammo Hung)
* Vengeance (Chang Cheh)

For those that are looking for something different than Martial Arts for a Shaw Bros. movie, I'm recommending "Behind The Yellow Line" with Leslie Cheung, Maggie Cheung and Anita Mui. The HK Blu-ray is decent.

I know The Chinese Boxer (Jimmy Wang Yu) is aka HAMMER OF GOD (in the 1970's).
Are any of these names matched with this list also?
7 BLOWS OF THE DRAGON
TRIPLE IRONS
KARADO THE HONG KONG CAT
SCREAMING YELLOW TIGER

TRIPLE IRONS is THE NEW ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN, which is on the list.

7 BLOWS OF THE DRAGON is THE WATER MARGIN, which was released on R1 DVD by Image Entertainment back in January 2007. (THE WATER MARGIN is about 40 minutes longer than SEVEN BLOWS OF THE DRAGON.)

I'd imagine there are many in various ethnic enclaves.

I think the company might have been able to carve out a much more stable niche for itself—a la Criterion, Blue Underground, Mondo Macabro‚ Kino and so on—instead of withering away the way it has been these past few months/years because of a distinct lack of consistent quality control that split the largely internet-connected fanbase for their films almost fifty-fifty.
Alas, the Weinstein company appears to be immortal. Teetering on the edge of bankruptcy with box office flops left and right and poor DVD releases, and the zombies seem to keep hanging on .

As Lorenzo mentions, a company like Criterion obviously "gets" this where Dragon Dynasty does not, and just wants to "get" product on shelves and profits in their pockets (and make excuses after-the-fact). One could argue that Criterion spends a lot more on rights for many of the films in their catalogue, and thus is duty-bound to treat those pictures like rare diamonds, but that gives Dragon Dynasty even LESS of an excuse to take the approach they have with a great many of their releases, because many of the films they've released do not come with exorbitantly high sticker prices from the original Asian distributors.
It's less that than the fact that their death grip prevents the films from getting decent releases in almost any territory. You'd think that with a movie having more releases than Evil Dead, one damn company at some point or another would get things right.

Perhaps Tarantino, as he extols the virtues of DVD, should stop and think about who he works for and what they do to the films he professes to love.

With their current financial situation, they may well, in the most literal sense, not able to afford to do it.

That one looks interesting and overly familiar, and I wonder if yet another period Mainland costumer is what any western distributor of Asian cinema really needs to stay afloat these days? There's a couple more of these - The Butcher, The Chef and the Swordsman and Tsui Hark's Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame - opening at TIFF next month, and I just can't get overly stoked just yet, despite having tickets. I'm more keen on checking out Barbara Wong's Break Up Club, an authentic Hong Kong picture of the kind that Hong Kong audiences have actually made popular the past few years.

Hell, they probably have some within the ranks of their own company! Or, perhaps they did when they actually had a respectable payroll.

I suppose if they survive into the download/streaming age, we might finally be able to see some of those little gems they're sitting on. Of course, one has to worry that they'll just haul the cannisters out of the basement and do only the most perfunctory of transfers . . .

Are any of these 60s musicals available on DVD anywhere? By that screen cap alone I want to buy some.

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

Far more of the musicals (and contemporary dramas, comedies, period operas and literal mountains of non-martial arts films that comprised a good half of the Celestial/IVL catalog at its peak) have gone out-of-print than are still in print, so it's advisable to get whatever you can at this point as they won't be seen on disc again, especially not in North America (where distributors want you to believe that Hong Kong only makes martial arts and action movies). You might also try Malaysian retailers, as I've heard a higher (though still dwindling) number of Shaw titles remain in print in that country.

Here's a sampling of the stuff people might have missed by relying on North American distributors and western "experts":
