I'm hoping DVDBeaver does a comparison review so we could see if there's an improvement image, subtitles and audio compared to the earlier versions.
Here's more screencaps:

http://www.hkfilm.net/dvdrevs/killer2.htm

I've read that the BD is encoded at 1080i, not 1080p, but judging by the above screencaps from the DVD, the PQ will be a vast improvement over both of my DVDs (Criterion and Fox Lorber).

*sigh* I'll keep the non-anamorphic for now. How hard is it to get a good R1 of Woo films?

That looks really good, if I come across it in a store I'll definitely pick it up.

Best Buy I believe has it for $14.99. Saw it in a couple of the stores I went to last week.

Does look good. I might have to pick it up.

LorenzoL or The Running Man, do you have any thoughts on this release?

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

Dropping the R3 extras (which were already subtitled in English) is a pretty annoying move. I don't understand how DD keeps doing proper NTSC versions of these Shaw titles but then does a half-assed PAL-to-NTSC job for a key title like The Killer. Is someone actually providing them with NTSC masters?

Stupid how DD releases 2nd straight barebones Shaw title when they've already shot and prepared extras for them. Could've atleast provided trailers for the film itself.

From what I understand, they're working with PAL HD D5 50i masters and then speed corrected during the down conversion process thus resulting in a correct NTSC DVD master.

Mission Impossible 2 looks pretty good to my eyes.

So why didn't they do this with The Killer DVD, or for that matter the two (36th Chamber and Killer) BDs? AFAIK there is no more technical obstacle to doing this with HD than there is with SD.

So, is it safe, now, to close the door on this company? Their crown jewel is on the streets on two formats, and it's compromised on both. Seriously, what's left to defend?

They really need to address the issues, rather than ignoring them. Their facebook page has comment after negative comment and they don't respond and keep posting happy news like nothing is wrong. I will admit to being part of the problem in that I am purchasing the titles, but I'm doing so reluctantly.

If they essentially used the HKL transfer and upgraded the pic quality to blu, why must they change the original title sequence, to only in english (and that looks like a shitty font too)

Perhaps we're supposed to be thankful they didn't change the title altogether, to something like THE LEGEND OF THE KILLER.

Judging by the screencaps, the image doesn't look that bad. I don't see any of the interlacing problems. I think it looks decent.

Yeah that is pretty damn ugly.

I always loved the original language title:

I think it looks great. Some on you guys just love to hate on DD, regardless of the quality of the title they're putting out.

That isn't the HKL transfer. Just like their Hard Boiled DVD they are using the master from Atlas, which uses the international print meaning all the titles are in English only. And just like their Hard Boiled release, it is inferior to the German DVD that uses the Atlas masters, except that it's even worse because of the PAL based transfer on this one.

For the record, the German DVDs that use the Atlas masters for Hard Boiled and The Killer are considered by many to be the best video transfers of those films up to this point.

Well, the company is struggling and barely hanging on. Most fans of HK/Chinese cinema are absolutely passionate about Picture quality/audio and subs (as you can see in the many posts here). I'm not as nit picky as most of the people here, but I can understand where they are coming from. If I'm going to spend my hard earned cash to buy their product and possibly double or triple dip on something like The Killer, I want the best product possible and there is no excuse considering the type of technology that is available to them to make these releases kick ass.

You closed the door on this company a long time ago, and yet you keep pointing at it and shouting as if it's threatening to open the door at some point.....and you are there to protect us! Thank you, sir, for your eternal vigilance.

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

After studying the dvdbeaver screen caps for about 15 minutes, I am kinda conflicted. On one hand, I agree that the change of font on the title screen is pretty sucky, but that last for all of several seconds? I don't particularly like the fact that the supposed Bey Logan commentary is not on the disc, I've always found him to be extremely well informed when it comes to commentaries. But after looking at the screen caps, the picture doesn't look as awful as some of you are proclaiming it to be. It's not awesome, all beat all...but it's better than the dvds they have as comparison. Maybe I'm in the minority, but until I see something better; I'm happy to buy this on blu-ray.

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

So is the DD Blu-Ray of The Killer worth getting?

I missed out on the Criterion when it was available, and have been looking to buy a version of this film for quite some time.
