I can't wait for this as well:)

This was the first film I ever saw in widescreen on VHS when it first came out. I was 11 at the time and immediately became O.A.R. savy from then on. Of course it took until dvd came out that I was finally able to view most films in their correct aspect ratio. Since widescreen VHS was hard to come by and laserdiscs were insanely expensive.

Nice release. I wonder if the HD-DVD will have more special features

To most fire departments, including mine, it did a great disservice to us. We are nothing like any of those characters and we don't do things like what went on in the movie. We pride ourselves in the excellent service that we provide to the citizens of the City of Los Angeles.

I remember reading quite a few fire releated publications and not one had anything good to say about the movie. It gave the fire service a black eye. The one film that did give the public an awareness of what we do and that was the TV show "EMERGENCY!" When we finished lunch, we'd go to the rec room and turn on the TV to watch the "EXPERTS" as we used to call them!!!

They may do things like that in New York, but here in the western states we are a 21st century fire service, not turn of the century fire service.

Since you're not a firefighter, you have no concept of what goes on in a fire house or at a fire but what you say above is probably what you've seen from the movies and that's most peoples conception.

Now, most all fire effects look phoney because there is so much smoke that you wouldn't be able to see anything, hence all the fire.

The only thing that I have personally from that film is the State of California using the picture from the poster on it's personalized plates. On the left of the plate is the firefighter silouetted with fire and 6 spaces. On the bottom it's written "FIREFIGHTER." Mine says BLZNVT and it's on my Corvette.

One other story, I was talking one day to the SFX man from the film and he was saying that it took them "2 weeks" to rig (completely strip the rig of everything) that fire engine to slide down the street. I then told him that it took a "second" for a 16 year old kid in a stolen Honda, going about 100 MPH and t-boning one of our engines that weighs "19 TONS" to flip this engine on to its roof and shove it 150 feet from where the kid hit it!!! Of course the kid was killed and the all the firefighters survived, they were buckled in.

I'm skipping this one too!

Sparks

Thanks for your insight. I guess I'm waiting for a movie about firefighting without the obvious cliches. I'll stick with RESCUE ME.

Cool? It was damn hot when I went. ;)

Love this film, and I don't think anyone ever thought less of the FD because of it. Everyone I knew just respected them more.

Depression 06-13-06 12:03 AM

Wow, Enemy of the State, Backdraft, Crimson Tide, Con Air, and True Lies all in one year, whats next... True Lies? Broken Arrow?

needlz 06-13-06 12:46 AM

It's been awhile since I've seen the film, but I personally did not think it portrayed the FD in a negative way. As a matter of fact, I believe many of the supporting cast were real life firefighters.

I still remember watching an Oprah episode about this movie when it first came out in theaters (yeah, yeah, yeah . . . not an Oprah fan, but wanted to watch it because I was interested in the film).

Anyways, the show had Ron Howard, most of the major actors, and many of the support cast who were real firefighters. It appeared they were 100% behind Ron Howard and Backdraft.

2 discs from Amazon!

Artman 06-24-06 04:45 PM

Love the movie, but for me this is a case of a rerelease being too close to HD. What would've been a purchase last yr is a wait for HD this yr. Glad to hear about all the extras too.

Is the Backdraft attraction no longer at Universal Studios? That's a bummer...at least I did it twice.

Yes the attraction is. I just went on it a month ago.

And you don't have to wait for the HD version. It's coming out on the same day. :)

You went on it or you went through it?

'Cause if you went on it, I'm guessing you won't ever need laser hair removal treatments again. ;)

I wish that they had included a home version of the Universal Studios attraction; maybe some matches and lighter fluid at least.

Harold Wazzu 06-27-06 09:36 AM

I will probably have to pick this up since the current version is one of the early Universal releases which has been known to crap out on people for no reason...

Just wish it had DTS, would sound quite good...but we'll see what they do with the DD track...

Julie Walker 06-27-06 12:50 PM

I still don't see how anyone could see the movie as a negative image of firefighters, but that's just me.

And I also don't understand all the DTS fanboys. I've seen films in theaters in both formats and could never tell a difference between the two. So if I saw a film in DTS in theaters and it was dolby digital 5.1 only on dvd. I didn't piss and moan about it since the film still sounded great to my ears.

Spoiler:
maybe because one of them is an arsonist

Julie Walker 06-27-06 10:41 PM

Guesswho, that's one person, not all of them. So I never took anything 'bad' away from the film in terms of my views on firefighters.

So to say the film is a highly negative representation of fire fighters is stretching it.

Artman 06-28-06 12:39 AM

Yeah, just look how many movies are about corrupt cops... But about the only criticism I can think of for the film is that it is very "hollywood-ish" in it's story, script (sex on a firetruck?)... Though I didn't like Ladder 49 nearly as much, it's probably a little more "real" in tone.

lamphorn 06-28-06 07:21 PM

The choice of release date is really crass. You can just hear the weasle in the boardroom "You see, it'll be the 5th anniversary of 9/11!! Everyone will fall in love with firemen again and buy our DVD!!! Score!!".

They should just call it the "9/11 Anniversary Edition" and be upfront.

Julie Walker 06-28-06 10:58 PM

I'm sure that had nothing to do with it. Sometimes releases just 'happen' like this. And regardless at least we're finally getting a 16.9 enhanced print of the film after a decade of nothing but the non-16.9 dvd.

gerrythedon 06-30-06 10:31 PM

DAVISDVD reports that this has been bumped a week. New date is 9/19 [for both DVD & HD-DVD]

I wish I had known that back then. At least I wouldn't have been on a wile goose chase all morning.

However, they had it at FYE, so I'm not complaining.

Ted Kontos 09-12-06 11:22 AM

Amazon has shipped my HD Backdraft to arrive tomorrow, so they haven't been delayed, at least there.

Wick 09-12-06 05:54 PM

I really need to get this set. I've always loved this movie.

digitalfreaknyc 09-12-06 06:52 PM

Guys.

43 minutes of deleted scenes.

Looks grainy and sounds sweet. Of course, I have the HD version.:)

Robert 09-12-06 07:20 PM

Picked this up at at Best Buy today. It wasnt on the shelf, it was on a cart. I asked the sales drone if I could buy it and she said yes. It comes with a nice shiny slipcase with raised lettering on the front.

ShaunoftheDead 09-13-06 09:30 AM

anyone see these at Circuit City?

My CC had a disclaimer under their ad stating that the release had been pushed back to 9-19.

No, but my CC in Savannah mannaged to put Hard Candy out already. Of course, since it wasn't officially released until next week, I couldn't buy it.

Manzana 09-16-06 05:29 PM

Has anyone found any reviews of the Backdraft Anniversary 2-DVD Edition? So far I have found absolutely nothing on the Internet. I'd like to make sure it's a good transfer before it comes out on Tuesday.

Several people (including myself) have the HD version and think it looks very good.

I don't know why anyone who's a fan of this movie WOULDN'T bite. It'a anamorphic at the VERY least and that's saying something.

Being the first edition was non-anamorphic, I am not sure how you could go wrong with this release.
