No, I had been buying dvd's for a while. This site certainly gave me many recommendations, especially into foreign films. I've also found the cheapest deals, although I missed out on the reel.com days.

DVDtalk also has some of the best moderation of all the forums I come across. That has helped me to stick around.

I think I had about 1000 dvds by time I found dvdtalk. I had about 500 before I even had a computer.

I use to buy DVD"S regulary. Since I found out about this site a few months ago, I'm really becoming a serious buyer. Thanks in all to the people's knowledge, sales happening and info helps me out alot on what to buy.

i used to post alot in the original Columbia House thread (I maintained the first list of CSRs and whether they would give out membership numbers over the phone or tell you to wait for the mailing). but most of the DVDs i bought in thaqt timke, i've sold off. and I would credit DVD Beaver as the reason my collection is as big as it is.

I had a lot of DVD's before DVDTalk was even around, but I'm glad I found it anyway.

I'll join in with the legions that say that it helped expand their collections. I also had a few DVD's, but when I found DVDTalk, man, I really started getting into them. For me, it was the "Post Your Home Theater" posts, that really got me going. At the time, I just had your typical 27" TV and my DVD's where in a little rack. Now..I've got the big screen, surround sound, pretty nice shelving for my movies, etc. I'm around 500 right now. I try to come as often as I can and post when I feel that I can add something to the discussions. Everyone here is great, and if it wasn't for DVDTalk, I don't think I'd have anything to look forward to when I use the internet!!

When I first bought a DVD player it was just to see Shannon Elizabeth's boobs in beautiful 480i resolution in American Pie.

580 DVDs later I'd say DVD Talk has caused me to buy a lot of DVDs.

I have Glenn Erickson, the appropriately dubbed "DVD Savant", to thank for quite a few of my DVDs. I have blind bought at least two dozen films based solely upon his recommendation, and have not been steered wrong yet.

josuff247 04-30-06 08:03 PM

It didnt start me, I bought 3 on my own, But my next 50 or so cost me anywhere from free to 4 dollors thanks to this site telling me about, Free-ride, 800.com, columbia house codes, price mistakes, etc. I miss 1999!! Now 13.99 on release week is deal to me, or 9.99 2 months later.

Dvdtalk helped make better choices, connect with film lovers, and offered many great recommendations, but it didn't start my collection just aided it.

Thanks.

i think this site is the best thing since sliced bread. i enjoy everything about it and love that it cultivated my dvd choices.

TomOpus 11-26-07 07:48 PM

Had to bump your own thread, eh?

DVD Talk did not start my collection, but it made it more intelligent and efficient...thanks, DVD Talk!!

The No Man 11-26-07 10:27 PM

DVD Talk sure helped turn me into an addict.

The reviews and forum community are the best around.

Big Worms 11-26-07 10:36 PM

acubfaninmd 11-27-07 08:46 AM

helped me expand my collection and helped me save money on dvds.

The Eliminator 11-27-07 09:05 AM

Nope.

Where are all the old timers?

Of course DVDtalk helped begin my collection. To be more specific, 800.com, Reel.com, and various other deal oriented sites(that I can't remember) started my collection, DVDtalk was just the middle man. :)

starseed1981 11-27-07 10:41 AM

Nope.

DJariya 11-27-07 10:44 AM

Definitely expanded my collection. When I first got a DVD player back in 1998, I told my sister and parents: "Don't worry, I plan to mostly rent." 9 years later, I still rent, but my collection has grown to astronomical proportions.

I think the old timers have moved on to the other parts of the forum, as dvd collecting just isn't as exciting as it used to be. I mean, pretty much all the important and classic movies have all been released and discussed ad nauseum. Sure, there's the HD formats now, but those are just glorified double-dips. The only things left to discuss are the deplorable store-exclusives. Sure, there's a few Criterions and other surprises here and there, but it's pretty much dried up compared to the early part of this decade and most people already own their favorite stuff on dvd already and have slowed WAY down - I know I have.
