It was either this or rental pricing, the studios wanted more money out of it. I used to buy several dvds a week, and always bought the latest 2 disc for around $15 at Walmart. Since this new price structure, I have only bought a few discs. Now I wait for a great sale or find a deal in the second shops. I figure HD is around and corner and used dvds will be a dime a dozen in a few years. I only owned a few laserdiscs when the format was around and now I own over a 1000 because amazing special editons could be had for a few dollars. Right now I'm hovering at around a 1000 dvds and it won't grow much the way things are right now. The real problem is that the studios raised the price $10 for special editions, and most retailers offer only a small discount, while they still offer up to %50 off on the single disc. If stores offered the same discount level, and the 2 disc was 17-18 dollars I would be happy with that.

I simply wait for them to get cheaper. I'm not in the "I have to have this the day it comes out" group, so I don't pay big prices. There are enough movies in this world I haven't seen yet that are much cheaper, I'll go with them.
It'll be even better once HD comes out. DVD's will be even cheaper to pick up. |

Unfortunately, we have all gotten used to the Wal-Mart way of shopping and have forsaken the memories of the days of laserdisc . . . continued in next post . . . |

If you want to express disdain, express it to the retailers. The studios are at least trying to provide options to the consumer (collector vs. Joe 6Pack). |
Abob is right - the studios aren't charging that much more for the 2-disc versions - it's the stores that aren't giving as big a discount to the 2-disc version as the 1-disc versions. They can only have so many loss-leaders.
