Missing Films -- Award Winners!

I understand that the only logic of what is released on DVD and what is NOT released on DVD is illogic, but I have to question why so many critically-acclaimed and award-winning films never show up on the shelves.

I fell in love with Kenneth Branagh's "In the Bleak Midwinter" ("A Midwinter's Tale" in the US...) years ago and have worn out two VHS copies showing it to friends. Now I can't even find the VHS version any more -- and no one seems to notice that it hasn't been released in the US on DVD.

Was it released in the UK? Does anyone know anything about it? Any information would be greatly reassuring...

Anyone else have missing films about which they feel passionately?

I don't believe that "In the Bleak Midwinter" has ever been released on DVD in the UK. I can't find any references to it at the usual sources (Amazon.uk, etc.).

You're preaching to the choir when it comes to the seeming illogicality of most studios' DVD release schedules. Just sticking with British cinema for the moment, it still completely boggles my mind that neither If... nor O Lucky Man! has ever been released by Paramount or Warners, respectively. Two key British films of their era, and two undeniable masterpieces!

Two more examples: The African Queen and Sergeant York.
