"Dawn of the Dead" (78)...which UE version?

I have yet to see the European cut which is why I am prompted to ask. I enjoyed the theatrical and digged the extended as well. Slight nod to the te though. I am looking forward to the European cut and really want to see if different and how.

So which of the 3 versions on the Ultimate Edition set to you prefer and watch most?

Time to revisit...and thoughts on this ultimate masterpiece of a film?

Extended.

But the only thing I don't like about the extended cut is the stock music that's played during the apartment raid and helicopter re-fueling sequences. Makes the movie look more dated than it really is.

Extended, i do agree about the music but the more Dawn the better.

I prefer Anchor Bay's 25th Anniversary Edition because it contains most of the footage from the extended but also includes all of the Goblin tracks.

Seantn 03-25-06 02:50 PM

I prefer the original US Theatrical Cut, because it's the one that I initially saw many many times when this movie became my favorite horror movie.

I think the European Cut is interesting, to see a movie that i'm so familiar with and yet it has totally different music that gives it a different feel (rock music!) and some different scenes and extensions or shortenings of scenes.

Haven't seen the extended cut. I'm gonna buy the UE soon, though.

 That would be my choice as well.

As far as the versions in the UE, I'd have to give the edge to the Theatrical vs the Extended since it has the complete Goblin score.

I actually prefer the Original Theatrical Cut... Don't know why, but that's the one I always go back to... But really, ya gotta love em all...

doesn't the Extended have the complete as well? i thought it was the te, just added scenes and added music...

I don't much like the European cut. I like the theatrical and extended fine (even the cheesy music). The new one isn't bad either (although if you listen to the commentary, the director comes across as way too pleased with himself).

Haha, the one person who picked the remake should be SHOT.

XD

I've seen the Theatrical Cut and the Extended Cut. I didn't like the extended version very much. I haven't seen the European cut.

Seantn 03-26-06 12:45 AM

The original is my favorite horror film of all time, but I loved the remake.

Same here. I prefer the extended cut of Dawn as my favorite though.

The theatrical. I enjoy the extended quite a bit, and the VHS I have (and watched A LOT) is extended, but the theatrical I just enjoy more. The European is okay. It's very interesting with a more serious tone and more gore (mostly headshots, alternate takes), but Goblin is overused, and I prefer the TC's tone.

Watching all is a good idea though. I believe there is quite a bit of stuff in the Euro cut not in the EC.

I wouldn't say avoid the Remake, but I liked very little about it. Which stinks because I was looking forward to it.

Gizmo 03-26-06 12:08 PM

I watched the Extended last night....way too long. The extra scenes were mostly filler (Extra shots of then walking around the mall), but some the additional gore scenes were pretty cool. I missed the Goblin soundtrack.

I like the original Dawn of the Dead, however I watch the remake more often.

The extended cut is just an early version they submitted to Cannes that year before it was quite ready. The theatrical cut is a more refined cut. The extended also has more of Romero's beloved "library" music he used as a temp track until the Goblin music was ready (or they had worked it in).

I prefer the theatrical cut because it flows much better but I like the extended cut in that it feels more epic. You get more of an idea of how long they were actually there in the mall.

US theatrical for me as stated on my review
here

JesseCuster 03-28-06 06:35 AM

I think the theatrical cut is the most optimum, "efficient" cut of the film, and I mean that from a pragmatic as well as an artistic perspective. It simply balances better than the other two IMHO. I very much like the fact that the other two versions exist though. The Euro version is a bit more grueling and audience conscious while the extended version is more conscious of story and character while sacrificing editorial rythym and dynamics to a certain extent.

BTW, I very much liked the remake. It's basically character driven, which is why the original is so beloved. A very, very interesting film, in a lot of ways.
