Reel.com's Criterion Interview

DVD Royalty

I found this to be a pretty interesting read. I knew Salo was rare, but not that rare.

darkside 03-24-06 07:55 AM

That was a cool read. I owned Salo way back when, but really thought it was an awful movie and sold it for a couple of hundred bucks. Bought mine in a record store which is really weird they received a copy at all considering there were only 2 thousand of them.

Lemdog 03-24-06 08:11 AM

PB: Because we lost the rights. We hope to remedy that in the near future.
Sound like time for me to sell my copy.

animatedude 03-24-06 08:19 AM

do you guys think they will be able to get the rights once again?

gryffinmaster 03-24-06 09:17 AM

Honestly, Salo has never interested me. Sure I might like to watch the film once just to see what all the hooplah is about - but it doesn't sound that great, in my opinion.

Seems like Criterion is dodging the HD-BluRay discussion right now. Probably a good idea.

Case01 03-24-06 09:23 AM

Ah finally a number for how many legit copies of Salo exist, I can rest easy.

Nice interview.

wendersfan 03-24-06 09:33 AM

I love the idea of "the six degrees of Jean Renoir".

That sounds like a game I'll play.

OldBoy 03-24-06 11:51 AM

so he ruled PC software, Monica, the DVD medium, tried to become the "Ultimate Fighting Champion"...Pete Becker has done a lot of stuff!

Damfino 03-24-06 01:13 PM

Wow. I hadn't been to the reel.com site in years. thanks for the link.

 That's the main thing that caught my eye. I hadn't thought about reel.com in a long time. Those were the days ;)

Nice interview.

I'm VERY surprised Becker revealed this information. I know of several people who have asked "Jon Mulvaney" this exact question in the past and the response was always "This is proprietary information that we will not divulge."

2,000 is, indeed, an incredibly low number. A "guesstimate" that I've seen thrown around was 5,000...I guess the two numbers aren't THAT far apart...

ernestrp 03-24-06 06:04 PM

I had no idea Reel.com was still around. Where are the coupons? Interesting article. I doubt I would buy Salo from what I have heard of it.

PopcornTreeCt 03-24-06 07:15 PM

Wow, that would be fantastic news if Salo came back in print.

MahatmaPetey 03-24-06 07:58 PM

i'd pick up Salo in a heartbeat (though not for a few hundred bucks). I don't know why it gets the reputation it does. Outside of the shit eating scene, i enjoyed it quite a bit.

Incase you're not joking, the entertainment/news part of reel.com never died, the e-comm side however, died many many years ago, and has since (and I believe still does) gets redirected to amazon.

Liquid Death 03-24-06 10:04 PM

Good interview - thanks for the link - I haven't been to reel.com in a LONG time...my first DVD was the Matrix, which I ordered from reel.

darkside 03-25-06 10:22 AM

At least 200 of my DVDs came from Reel.com so it was good to visit the old site. No telling how many of my Criterions were bought during the cheap DVD glory days.

TheNightFlier 03-25-06 10:27 AM

Great interview. A lot of interesting facts, I'm another one who was surprised they said how many copies of Salo were made.

conscience 03-25-06 10:42 AM

Wow 2,000 for Salo? And I actually bought it from Reel.com when they actually sold dvds. Too bad I got rid of it (in a very direct fashion) so my mom wouldn't find it and call me a prevert.

That's going in my sig.

Jason 03-25-06 07:14 PM

So reel.com is nothing more than an elaborate amazon affilliate site? That's kinda sad.

Of course, they're probably making more money now than they were with those 40% off preorders, $10 off of $40 coupons, and $25 rebates from that coupon site.

ernestrp 03-25-06 07:43 PM

Their best coupon was the Playboy code for a Free Dvd. Like how many did we each get off of that? Oh no, I'am starting to remember Bigstar.com.... And 800.com which takes you to Circuitchity.com.

evenswr 03-25-06 08:44 PM

Since this has become a Reel.com nostalgia thread, I thought I'd better jump in here and show off my really old Join Date. Not as old as pilot or conscience, but a little older than ernestrp. Just think: The graduating class of this year were ten years old when I joined this forum. And I lurked for months!

Anyway, great article, and if I recall correctly, I got dozens of my first discs from Reel.com way back, thanks to this forum. I seem to remember picking up Brazil: Criterion for cheap there...

PopcornTreeCt 03-25-06 10:39 PM

I got so many DVDs from them too. I actually started getting so many I started selling them and turning a decent profit. I regret not being into foreign films at the time. I wasn't too knowledgeable of the Criterion collection at the time and their dvds seemed not to be worth it at the time when i was getting movies like South Park BLU and American Pie for like $5.
