Edge Ringing on DVD'S?
 

Why do we see so much Edge Ringing on DVD's? Cant they just rid that type of artifact from the image?

Actually, it's often added to the image to make it "sharp-looking."

Yeah more often than not, it's a bad job of "sharpening" the transfer.

Edge enhancement always seems like some sort of conspiracy theory to me even though I see it myself on DVDs. It doesn't make sense that it's added in in the first place since every tv has a sharpness control and the general public has that set too high in the first place. In other words, they're not impressing the general public and only drawing the ire of DVD reviewers and home theater enthusiasts.

And then comes the question of why DVDs from the same studio exhibit differing amounts of edge enhancement. IMO edge enhancement isn't added in intentionally and is probably a culmination of many factors through the entire authoring process. If it was added intentionally I would think there would be more consistency within studios.

Sometimes it is intentional and sometimes it isn't. In the supplements on the Grave of the Fireflies DVD, there's a featurette about the video transfer in which some studio moron turns on the edge enhancement right there on camera and brags about how it makes the video "nice and sharp".

I'll be damned. Do these people go to school for this?

The real problem is that some of these studios are checking their work on "reference" monitors that are only in the 30" range, and they are simply incapable of seeing artifacts that are much more visible on a large home theater screen.
