I don't know. If so, I would think it would have been done by now. They put out a criterion LD of Crash, so I would have expected a DVD version by now if it were going to happen. But who knows...

I always thought that Spinal Tap and Sid & Nancy were MGM (now Sony) properties.

Nope. Check out the back covers of those two releases:

Sid & Nancy
This is Spinal Tap

MGM has never licensed any films to Criterion in the DVD era (nor has MGM's new parent company, Sony).

Spinal Tap and Sid & Nancy were in the very early days of the DVD format and as we all know have been put out of print, so whatever deal was struck concerning them obviously expired. I had heard via the criterionforum that all the rest of these titles were part of a special deal negotiated several years ago and I believe Crash was also part of that deal. It is possible that that is misinformation, because John Mulvaney indicated around the time of the Videodrome release that no more Cronenberg was coming, but we will see. Criterion doesn't like to tip their hand before they are almost at release with most titles.

You're wrong. Several Orion titles ("Silence of the Lambs", "Robocop", "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and "This Is Spinal Tap") were licensed to Criterion over a year after Orion was aquired by MGM.

MGM no longer licenses to Criterion but they did in the late 90's.

I'm afraid you are incorrect. All of the films you listed were licensed to Criterion by Orion Pictures prior to its sale to MGM. As Peter Bracke correctly writes here,

MGM recently bought Orion Pictures, which has been folded completely into MGM. Orion's library contained over 1,000 films. However, Orion had signed DVD licensing arrangements with other companies before the buyout, and those contracts are being honored by MGM. Once those licensing agreements expire (in around two to three years), MGM will retain full distribution rights over Orion titles.
To reiterate, MGM has not licensed any films to Criterion during the DVD era.

In the recent Criterion newsletter, there is a logo and a line: New look, new line... coming this fall.

I wonder if this means Blu-ray, HD-DVD or both?!?

TheNightFlier 04-06-06 06:10 PM

I'm another one who can't wait for Equinox.

It's the Eclipse line Criterion is releasing. There's already a thread on it.

illennium 04-06-06 11:09 PM

Criterions available for pre-order at Amazon -
Dazed and Confused, Equinox, A Nos Amours , Harlan County, U.S.A., Viridiana, Late Spring, Fists in the Pocket, and The Complete Mr. Arkadin.

Might be a good time to pop them in the Wish List and get a Gold Box coupon as well.

My grandma and grandpa are in Harlan County u.s.a. Harlan county is where my mom is from so I'll probably be getting that movie.

I saw Equinox a number of years ago on AMC, and I have to say it did leave an impression on me. Sort of like the filmmakers were pretty short of money, resources and experience, but they had a very strong artistic vision. Definitely on the cheesy side, but also atmospheric and pretty ambitious for such a low-budget flick. I'd enjoy seeing a restored print of this.

yeldarb367 04-11-06 01:50 AM

I love that cover.

jmj713 04-11-06 11:20 AM

What's up with Amazon's pricing of Late Spring?

$39.95 + $0.04 sourcing fee

WTF? No usual 30% discount?

utopianz14 04-14-06 07:50 PM

I didn't see this reported anywhere else, but I noticed in the Coming Soon section of the Criterion website that they've listed two titles for release in July: Yi Yi and Koko: A Talking Gorilla.

Link: http://www.criterionco.com/asp/coming_soon.asp

Personally, I'm wicked excited about Yi Yi, and I love the cover art.

Edit: Sorry, I just saw the post about the announcement of these two titles. Nothing came up when I did a search...
