You mean this: From USA Today

DVD
Godzilla and friends storm our shores

It's Godzilla's turn to roar on DVD. On Sept. 5, Classic Media will
release a $22 two-disc set devoted to the mutant dinosaur that
includes for the first time in the USA the complete, uncut 1954
Japanese film Gojira and the revised 1956 U.S. version, Godzilla:
King of the Monsters.

Both films have been remastered in high-definition and widescreen
format. Gojira includes 40 minutes that were edited from the U.S.
version.

The studio plans to include extras such as a commentary about the
historical significance of the film. "It was really not meant to be
a major monster movie. It was more of a political movie with strong
anti-nuclear messaging," Classic's Robert Mayo says. On the same
date, Classic will reissue six other remastered Godzilla films (both
Japanese and U.S. versions) in a $70 DVD set

Ouch. Wasn't Gojira filmed academy ratio? King of Monsters may be wide, but not Gojira right?

Yes, both "GKOTM" and "Gojira" are in academy ratio (which means "fullscreen" is the OAR for both).

Just checked tokyomonsters.com and the guy there emailed someone at Classic Media. They said the blurb is incorrect. They will not be formatted in widescreen. Their website and press release say otherwise, but hopefully they will be fullscreen. Maybe they think high definition and widescreen go hand in hand. I really hope they are OAR as I have been waiting forever for this.

ernestrp, I HOPE you were kidding! The ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIO is fullscreen. If they trim it to widescreen, there's no way in hell I'll buy it. Can you imagine how much of the film you'd be missing?!?

Can we get a thread title change here? This thread should be bigger than this by now.

We have been waiting forever for a set like this, I am personally pretty stoked myself. Wife and I saw the original cut when it was making the rounds in the Chicago area a few years back, incredible motion picture that deserves a far better reputation than Old Ironsides gave it.

Yes, we need a jazzier thread title here This is great news ... I've been waiting for years to retire my really old VHS bootleg with a great edition that this movie deserves. I was shocked nothing for done for the 50th anniversary in 2004 ... but I guess they could always consider the American release as the date, making 2006 the anniversary (which is silly, but I'll take the DVD). And an affordable set with 7 remastered movies? Sounds great! I hope there's more extras than just a commentary. There's just so much more you could do with this. Although a bonus disk in the box set with extras that cover the whole early series would be great.

Has there been any inkling as to what will be in the six movie set?

Classic Media?! The Rankin-Bass distribs?? Hmm, those aren't exactly great transfers. Hope they're up to the task this time!

I think the titles they previously released will be given new transfers and be a part of the box set. I'm not exactly sure which other ones they're releasing, though.

The other films will be Godzilla Raids Again, Godzilla vs Mothra, Ghidra the Three-Headed Monster, Godzilla vs Monster Zero, Godzilla's Revenge, and Terror of Mechagodzilla. All are supposedly going to be original aspect ratio with Japanese soundtracks. Any of the major kaiju sites should have all the info, like Henshin Online.

since Rialto Pictures - had rereleased this in 2004 - I thought Criterion would have done the honors of a deluxe SE - oh well, wishful thinking there.

From what I've been reading these should be some pretty nice DVDs. Almost a year late, but hopefully they'll be worth the wait. I can't wait to get Godzilla Raids Again on DVD! This is very good news.

I can't wait to finally watch the complete, uncut version of Gojira.

Great! The set fills in a major portion of the cycle current absent from DVD (unless you like Japanese discs that is)

Wonder when (or if) we'll get Godzilla vs. Biollante?

Out in Japan and also France (but afaik the French disc has forced French subs)

I like the idea of a giant Godzilla battling monster based on roses!

what we really need is a thread listing out everything that is out in region 1, and what is still missing. (as in alternate cuts like the King Kong vs Godzilla)

Well, from what I can gather, from various places:

Godzilla - due September, Classic Media

Godzilla Raids Again - Due September, Classic Media

King Kong vs. Godzilla - Released

Mothra vs. Godzilla - Due September, Classic Media

Ghidora The Three Headed Monster - Due September, Classic Media

Invasion of the Astro Monster - Due September, Classic Media

Ebirah, Monster of the Deep - Released (as Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster

Son of Godzilla - Released

Destroy All Monsters - Released (ADV - not a particularly good one though)

All Monsters Attack - Due for release September, Classic Media

Godzilla vs. Hedora - Released

Godzilla vs. Gigan - Released

Godzilla vs. Megalon - Released, but only as horrid pan-and-scan cheapies in R1; proper OAR editions in Germany and France, but no English tracks or titles

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla - Released

Terror of Mechagodzilla - Due for releases September, Classic Media

Return of Godzilla (Godzilla 1985) - no release

Godzilla vs. Biollante - only r2 (France), forced subtitles

Godzilla vs. King Ghidora (1991) - Released, but pan-and-scan in r1 as double bill with

Godzilla vs. Mothra: The Battle for Earth (1992) - Released but pan-and-scan in r1

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II - Released

Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla - Released as double bill with

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah - Released

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack - Released

Godzilla 2000 -Released, shorter US edition in r1

Godzilla vs. Megaguirus - Released

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) - Released

Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. - Released

Godzilla: Final Wars - Released

Except where shown otherwise, releases are r1, and are from Columbia-Tristar, or later Sony, after they took over. Releases are OAR unless otherwise stated. DVD releases have been under the titles indicated, which means that most have come under the "original" rather than the US alternates (the most notable exception being the Ebirah film, one assumes they wanted "Godzilla vs" in the title!

The list excludes the r2 Japanese releases, since they don't have any English track, and are difficult and expensive to get hold of.

That's as far as I can make things out, anyway. So the majority of the movies will be out after September, with a couple of notable exceptions, but it's a pity that several of the Columbia/Sony ones are pan-and-scan jobs.

I'm not a Godzilla expert by any means, so corrections are welcome.
And now my brain hurts and I'm going to have a little lie down somewhere!

Me to, I don't have any specs, but I think that 98 version has gotten so unfair treatment from audiences. I won't upgrade, I got it on the cheap side and don't watch it that often. Still, when I went to see it in the theater, I thought it was a solid film.

I thought the '98 film was good (liked the backstories), but it was not a Godzilla film. More like a Jurassic Park sequel.
