Kicking and Screaming coming soon from Criterion?

The new Criterion Newsletter announces this title with Dazed and Confused.
"Were you Dazed and Confused last month, or just Kicking and Screaming?"

Are they talking about that average will ferrell movie or is this some other movie?

Drexl 03-02-06 06:00 PM

I don't know. April Fool's is four weeks away.

GeoffreyL 03-02-06 06:01 PM

It is the Will Ferrel one. That way you can put it next to the Goodburger criterion. I have not rec. the newsletter yet, but I bet it is not the Ferrel film.

g 03-02-06 06:03 PM

I looked up on Imdb.com and didn't find the other one.

Well, GB is #0. We'd be into negative spine numbers if KAS were to be released.

I got the news letter too, and it's most definitely going to be the long-awaited DVD release of Noah Baumbauch's Kicking and Screaming. Wes Anderson is a Criterion regular, and Baumbauch teamed up with him on Life Aquatic and will do so again with The Fantastic Mr. Fox (plus Baumbach got some name recognition with last year's The Squid and the Whale).

Color me excited.

Perhaps they are talking about this:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113537/

Although I can't say it is really Criterion-worthy.

Edit: Beaten to the punch.

They have to be talking about Baumbauch, not that Will Ferrel crap.

Seems kind of an odd choice for Criterion; it's really only noteable for Parker Posey's scenes, and she's done lots better movies than this. Why not a Criterion 'Henry Fool' instead?

Ooh... I would kill for a Criterion 'Josie And The Pussycats.'

gryffinmaster 03-02-06 06:34 PM

Definitely NOT the Ferrell film. Haven't a clue about the other film ... is it any good? The quotes seem entertaining on imdb.

MasterCXtreme 03-02-06 09:08 PM

I caght this one on tv a few months ago, the title caught my eye from obviously being the same as Ferrell's soccer flick from last year. I liked it a lot, awesome dialogue. And I would definitley pick up the dvd if they put it out,

It does have some good lines. The part where someone asks a video store clerk about Dr. Giggles in widescreen was a nice touch. Overall as a movie though, it didn't do much for me. The only reason I even know about the flick is cuz a friend of mine was obsessed with it about 9 years ago.

Kicking and Screaming is one of my all time favorite flicks. I was in high school at the time and the movie more or less was preparing me for what to expect after college, it was pretty damn accurate I must say. I spread out my 4 year college career to 6 years and would have stayed longer if I could.

I cannot wait for the Criterion DVD, I can now replace my FS, no-frills, Trimark Laserdisc of the movie.

fnordboy 03-03-06 09:28 AM

This is great news. I am a big fan of this film. Definitely will be picking this up.

runnersdialzero 03-03-06 09:55 AM

This is one of the greatest underseen movies of all time. I think it used to come on Comedy Central a lot before they got their own programming.

Some of the best dialogue.

Easy College Girl - "I hope you don't mind that I took my top off."

Senior College Guy - "Well...maybe just this once."

ChristianB 03-03-06 01:20 PM

Yes, there was an official anouncement on the February edition of the Criterion Newsletter.

lamphorn 03-03-06 04:11 PM

This is one of my favorite movies! If this is for real, then I am very excited. I've been pulling my hair out with frustration that Kicking and Screaming (the real one, of course, not that Will Ferrell nonsense) was not available on DVD and out of print on VHS. I saw this in college and my friends and I have watched it so many times that the tape I have is worn out. So glad Criterion is doing it because they'll probably do it right. Also can't wait for Dazed and Confused from Criterion.

I've checked out the Criterion site and see nothing about either film. I hope it's true.

ChristianB 03-03-06 07:15 PM

oh, it's coming, just nothing officially announced regarding release date or features or specs....

Both titles have been officially announced.

AWESOME NEWS.

Great little indie film. Sorely underlooked. I can't believe this is finally getting a DVD release, let alone a Criterion one! Bye Bye to the Laserdisc, finally!

BasiaMille 03-03-06 08:23 PM

Is this Criterion Newsletter available on the web? I didn't see it on their site.

It is noteworthy that Baumbach contributes essays on other films for Criterion (e.g. Truffaut's Bed and Board)

Having a good year. First Metropolitan, now this. I swear, Baumbach and Stillman should collaborate, and Chris Eigeman should be the star!

A Criterion K&S DVD also guarantees better than a huge Eric Stoltz mug on the cover. I realized he's Baumbach's leading man of choice, but he's an ensemble player at best in this comedy! If anything, this is Josh Hamilton's movie, and he's not even on the damn LD cover! We've got to do better than this:
