Dear DVDTalkers, How's it going? George here. I love reading DVDTalk. I especially love it when you guys kid around about me ruining "Star Wars". Too funny... lol! Anywho, I completely forgot I was involved with this movie. Apparently a few people care enough to want this movie. If not for my buddies at DVDTalk, then who? I'll look into this for you guys. Maybe a couple internet petitions might seal the deal. Well, I gotta run. Harrison wants to look at the Indy script and I "misplaced" it again. It's so fun to keep him waiting. lol! Well, Lucas did say he was never going to release the original Star Wars movies unedited... it is only a matter of time before we get Howard The Duck on DVD.

I read somewhere online that Lucas himself personally bought the distribution rights to the film so that it never will be released on DVD. Not sure if that has been brought up here before, but given how long it has taken Universal to issue a dvd, I see that as a possibility. Though, I doubt it.
This should have been released on dvd long ago. It would be a very popular Wal-Mart dump bin title for sure more than likely. Or not..... There seems to be a market for it, since many say it's so bad, it's good. That April fools day release announcement is obviously a joke. I ain't laughing, this is a nice little silly fluff piece of a film, and worse movies have been released on dvd before. |

I think you guys are looking to the wrong person. Lucas doesn't own the film. I'd suggest contacting Universal, which is the studio that owns the film. Truthfully, I don't think Lucas has any problem with Howard. It's the Star Wars Holiday Special he loathes and will never release. Lucas doesn't pull the strings on this and I doubt he'd give it a second thought if Universal decided to release it. I can only imagine Universal believes few would buy it to make it a profitable endeavor to release it.

Lucas disowned the movie, he hates it. Still, I doubt very seriously Lucas is holding this up. Universal is the one that's holding it up. |

a) viewers have a right to see how good or bad it and how silly it is b) so all this Lucas talk will wind on down c) Universal releases worse titles than Howard The Duck on dvd d) there is a market for campy movies like this from the 80's, good or bad e) the special features might be better than the movie j/k! f ) and finally, because Lea Thompson is hot in this film! Lot's of selling points there which Universal has largely ignored. They may be the ones ashamed of the film, and not George Lucas. |
