I would have to agree on that one. I do say thoough that this Movie (boondock saints) has been long overdue for some sort of 2 Disc S.E. so next week is a dang good week with KoH 4 Disc set, Boondock Saints 2 Disc set AND Deadwood S2, lol. An expensive week for me for sure.

now i have to see "Overnight" is it ever on cable?

Randy Miller III 05-16-06 01:59 PM

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you know I have a screener copy in hand. It's in the Steelbook casing and looks really sharp---there's no insert, strangely enough, and the movie disc is double-sided (pand-and-scan/widescreen). I hope to have a complete review up over the weekend, but I'll try to answer a few specific questions here until then, if you have any.

Gah-I assume this means the movie disc is a DVD-18. Ugh. It won't keep me from buying it, but why the heck did they even bother with the MAR transfer?

Yeah, tell me about it. It's enough to make me want to stick a blank label on the fullscreen side.

I hate to disappoint you guys, but I gave this a quick spin last night and wasn't overly impressed.

The good:
- The technical presentation is improved, and the outer packaging looks great.

The bad:
- Disc 1 is a DVD-18 and the discs are overlapping on one side of the case (no insert).
- Disc 2 is about 20 minutes long (?!) and basically doesn't add anything new.

Also, it's worth noting that the commentaries on Disc 1 are seperate tracks. As I don't have the first disc readily available (since I just moved, most of my older discs are still in storage), I can't tell whether or not Duffy's commentary is new or not, though it doesn't appear to be. Can anyone with the original release paraphrase what Duffy says during the first few scenes for me?

Its the same commentary on the old non-anamorphic version. Duffy explains why in his interview on IGN:

Randy Miller III 05-17-06 08:49 AM

Thanks for clarifying, Robert (and the link!). Much appreciated!

tofferman 05-17-06 03:51 PM

For those who want it now, it seems Costco has this release out a week early ($17.49 in Bend, Oregon). This is also posted in the Costco thread for 5/16 (dvd bargains).

M Polo 05-18-06 06:06 AM

Yup I didn't expect this to be the end all loaded edition but I'll take the extra couple minutes and the nice packaging and maybe a cleaner picture for $16. I'll pass my old copy down to my little brother who loves the movie as well.

AfRoMaN787 05-18-06 06:09 AM

Are the chapters the same on this new disc? If they are then I'll just use the insert from the first edition of the movie and put it in the steelbook case.

This new cut runs for 1:48:20 and includes 24 chapters. On a related note, could anyone with the original DVD handy tell me the exact running time of the theatrical cut?

eXcentris 05-18-06 10:52 AM

Well my Lions Gate release runs for 1:48:18 (including credits) and has 16 chapters but I assume you mean't the US release.

dvd_luver 05-18-06 11:46 AM

I have upgraded 3 films this week in my dvd collection. Enemy Of The State, Con Air and Crimson Tide. I am happy to find I will upgrade on this next week so that will be 4 upgrades in the last 2 weeks. Just plain nuts man. :)

That's good enough, but it's still odd about the running times (which are almost identical, despite this version's minute or two of new footage). Either way, the review is now up for your viewing pleasure right here. Enjoy! :)

OldBoy 05-18-06 04:20 PM

wow! 25 minutes on the 2nd disc and slightly better vid quality...that sucks. i'm sure die-hard fans will be mightily pissed. i'm just getting it for the 'steelbook' i guess. too bad they focused on the outside and not the substance inside.

Willh51 05-18-06 07:50 PM

I'll be getting this for sure but I'm a bit disappointed in the content, would've liked a retrospective doc. on the film's cult status and colorful director. It would have at least been better if disc 1 was widescreen and features, and disc two was full screen if it was that necessary to do non OAR.

AfRoMaN787 05-18-06 09:19 PM

Just picked this up from costco for 16.99 and wow is this case awesome.

bunkaroo 05-19-06 03:59 PM

Just got this. Disc 1 is actually a dual-sided, single layer disc. I checked the widescreen side in my PC, and it measures 4.23GB.

tacos 05-19-06 04:50 PM

?...........................Damn

bunkaroo 05-19-06 09:23 PM

Actually this isn't totally unusual for Fox, as recent releases of theirs (Stay, Transporter 2 and I Heart Huckabees come to mind) have been this way, usually when the fgilm is short enough to be on one layer.

Still not happy about it though. The last disc didn't even have a 4:3 side. Why they felt this one needed it I don't know.

tacos 05-19-06 09:37 PM

Hows the picture quality in your eyes? Stay had a very good transfer in my opinion. So, maybe this want be such a big deal.
